Wtf does the Tao have to do with Communism or Mao? This is why fundementalist Jews, Christians, and Muslims should not be elected to any government office. Should they be able to run and vote? Sure, but should there also be enough intelligent people in the voting population to ensure they are relegated to fringe elements, yes. Sadly that is not the case.

100%. Maybe they'll do that after the UN does the other right thing to do, and unites to stop Russia's invasion of Ukraine by putting troops on the ground, and fighters in the skies over Ukraine. You being an imperialist I can see you hating the Tao. Conflating it with communism is ridiculous. You can lay equal blame on that one if not more so with that long haired cult leader and his band of hippie followers that all quit their jobs, and started feeding the masses with free bread and fish. Curing the poor for free, living rent free in a manger and shit. Sounds lots like a commune to me.

Tao seems like a pseudo philosophical version of orthodoxy without Christ, the holy fathers, or the sacraments. The principles seem sound but what's the point of it?

At the beginning Taoism was not a religion at all. It was a philosophy. It eventually was mixed with traditional Chinese religion inorder to maintain the legitimacy of the Emporer when it was named the official religion of China. Previous to that it was viewed as a rebellious and seditious philosophical movement that threatened the 1st Dynasty's divine claim to power, and It's teachers were hunted and put to death.

Family's found sheltering Taoists as they traveled could lose their homes, lands, and lives for taking them in. It was the Tao's lack of heavens and hells, demons and spirits, eternal rewards or punishments that was so dangerous to the Empire, and it's inherently understandable logic that there were no spirits, gods, devils, demons, or angels just humans trying to live in harmony with the natural world they are surrounded by and at the mercy of. It spoke to the complexity of reality, of our world without requiring praying to this or that imaginary being for blessings or mercy, who the Emporer was the the supreme divinely appointed intermediary with on earth.

Also, it's not pseudo philosophy. It's the cornerstone of Eastern philosophy.
