Crank It Up Metal!

That's the tasty distortion I too desire! There just is'nt any other way to achieve it!

Yer right UltraGary,
I can vouch for the Rebel 20, bedroom levels are terrific. There is enough volume/gain stacks involved on that amp to create distortion wherever you want it whenever you want it. This amp taught me the tonal differances between power tubes (I love L84's now) as well as where exactly I like my gain stacks. Very good eductional tool for me personaly all around. Awesome recording amp as well. Been to the studio for 30hrs with it and it sang! I beleive these amps were intended for bedroom levels but upon further review they also cover small gigs as well as rehearsal time just fine. True unfiltered cranked tube distortion without bleeding ears. Very Practical!

That is what I built them for, bedrooms and studios where space was an issue. The cool thing about a little amp with an FX loop thou is of course you can use it to drive any size poweramp.

I am going for the worlds smallest amp record.
Probably going to be a micro watt. When I plug in it wont even be heard unless mic'd.
Here is a pic of the prototype and the guy thats going to build it for me.
I heard he is the BEST!!

hehehe.....Awesome!
Somehow I'm prepared for someone to explain to us how great this would be for a stage amp through the proper cabinet.

:hys: Mailmann You come up with some funny shit!  Great sense of humor!

Maybe the most bizarre part of this small amp wave (to me anyway....) is the fact that no one ever talks about or compares how these amps sound at bedroom levels.
I just read 2 reviews in GuitarPlayer (the Rebel & the new 65 Amps Lil Elvis)....and all they really go into is this question of whether or not 5-15 watts can handle playing with a live band. We're almost through 2 pages on this thread and there's not one comparison to....say...the Vox NightTrain to the Mesa Transatlantic (or whatever).
Who'd have thought that 5 watt amp discussions would all involve nothing but how big a venue is?....

Actually I am not surprised how this thread turned out. What I am surprised about is how much whether having more small amp models out is a trend or not. What I meant by trend is that amp manufacturers all seem to have to have a sub 15Watt model. That just didn't happen in the past. Sure they were small wattage amps, but not everyone had one.

As far as comparisons, I really hope the local store gets some Marshall Class 5's in so I can compare them to the Fender SuperChampXD and the Vox AC4TV among others.

1Big1 Go satisfy that! Try the Rebel20, or the Rebel30 if you need two channels. They are the most versitile IMO of all the small amps. If you put the tube mix @12o'clk on the R20 it's about 30watts and these sound great through a 2x12. Serial effects loop takes pedals well. Ain't nobody ever told me they hated the tone, nothing but compliments. I'd put clips up but I REALLY suck at it. Plenty of good ones on Youtube. Just a quick review from someone who has ran it hard for two years now. It's held up great.

I hear you have to mic it about 1/4" away from the bottom right speaker......but I have to trial and error.

i may be able to check one out on saturday. the local gc had one on display the last time i was there. i think it was a 30. i'm thinking a head version of the 30 because it has all the bells and whistles i'd ever need both for gigging and home recording. i've really been digging the clips and vids i've been researching. very focused and 3-d sounding. i don't need death metal distortion. something nice and warm and crunchy with a bit of cream on the top is where i'm coming from.. sorta like a hot fudge sundae. i'm playing covers with a bunch of over the hill guys more for fun than anything else these days.. but i still want it to sound good.
i've been waiting to see how the design held up over time. i got burned on the early version of the dsl and really don't want to deal with that type of a massive headache again. once was more than enough. it's good to know that yours has been going strong for two years. that would make me feel much better knowing that going in. thanks.

I wouldn't call it a musical trend, the demand wasn't really there from the consumers (they are not really that much lower in volume anyway) It was more like a manufacturer trend of follow the leader and all this mini amp stuff was prefaced by the Valve JR. that amp is responsible.

Blame the trend on the Valve Jr. :loco:

Hey man Your talking to an over the hill (43yrs old) playin rock covers for fun guy   Any of the Egnater tour series will cover the stuff. Those amps are voiced more for that. You will need a 4x12 and OD's to really do metal. Or a 100 watt amp!

Should have mentioned that it has hit the ground twice while in the gig bag with no damage what-so-ever. Short falls. I got lucky

i've got a carvin x-60 with a marshall 1960a or b for that. i've been working on a pedalboard setup for that as well as of late. still have a few tweaks i need to make.. but it's coming along.
i'm 54.. but still can't stop that foolish desire to go out and play. i was talking to a guy the other day who's been in this crazy business longer than i have. he swears advil has become his fourth food group.  but he loves what he does and that's the bottom line.

+1 on that 1big1! I'll stop when I die! Still learning new things. I started gigging at 15. At what age do we start forming blues bands to componsate for our age! Or are we too late :D

i started out at age 12. i don't know about starting a blues band per se.. though i can play blues. i do know i won't be wearing spandex anymore though. :D

MOAAH .... we all want you too make amps again.

As far as the bass goes ....
It is all about mix and what kind of bass player you have. The bass player I work with the most plays full frequency like a piano.
Often I am below or above him. I am not a big fan of bass players that just stick to the bottom.
When using a amp that has a lot of bass I almost always mix it with a amp the cuts in the upper midrange like a Marshall.
When using the traditional shelving method of mixing like you guys are talking about you are completely right.
For a real world example of what I am talking about a lot of the band Tool's work has the bass on top of the guitar.
I do not use the bass heavy guitar sound all the time .... but it does have it's place when used right. Most people do not use it right as far as I can tell.
