Garmins and Trimbles have the best accuracy, from my experience, but Trimbles are prohibitively expensive...I would definitely go with a Garmin...

I've had an inexpensive TomTom for a few years now, and it's worked great. A couple of times I've missed a turn because I second guessed which turn it meant, and each time I knew immediately that I'd screwed up.
As for the iPhone, you might want to check with your provider...I have friends here in the states (on AT&T of course) who've been able to get international calling for a set amount of time while traveling in Europe, and it wasn't too absurdly expensive.
If you want to send me your Suhr/Axe FX rig you can borrow my iPhone while you're traveling...

I will be spending way more time in the USA (Cali) than a simple trip if everything goes as planned, so a USA roaming plan through Bell Canada wouldn't be cost effective.
If things go right I will be staying there

I have a Garmin Nuvi (I'll have to check on the model) and it's awesome! Used it to travel to the states last month, worked like a charm!

I have the Garmin 255W, works great, the price is right, usually well under $200.00

I have both a Garmin and a Tom Tom and they are both great at what they do and you can't go wrong with either. But
With that said and since you said that you are blind as a bat then you will need to get a GPS that will speak out the turns and street names when giving directions. Some of the lower end GPS's do not have this (like my Tom Tom) They will say in 100 yards make a left and you will really need to look at the GPS in order to make the right turn. My Garmin lets you know when the turn is comming an the street name and it's way easier to use.
