I agree, SD-1 in front of most of these. For pure tone I say Superlead. But I can’t play them as loud as they need to be played, so JCM800 wins for practicality.

I love Superleads but the 2203 can get damn close and the master volume makes it the winner for me as the Superleads require attenuation unless you want to be deaf. Yes the 2203 sounds best at roaring volume as well. 2203 with a geq in front can sound really close to a Superlead.

Superlead. No other listed Marshall is getting those cleans other than JTM. Hit with a little dirt, perfect amp.

I'll just take none of the above. Lame features with the exception of the JVM, nothing special in the tone department.

My DSL fucks hard with the Maxon OD808X. My fave all tube Marshall for what I play.

I'd go with JMP 2203 but only if you can kick a SD-1 in front of it.
The most important question with any non-JVM (or arguably SLX) Marshall is what cheap solid state gain box has the tone you really want to hear in place of the amp :D

Marshall's holy trinity. Don't care for the earlier bluesy JTM tones and later ultra (over) gained JVMs.

I don't mind the JTM or JVM amps that much

But there's a large gap between "don't mind" and "holy grail" or "best of the best"

With a super lead, 2203, or 800 and a pedal I can get any tone I'd need - including the super heavy stuff.

The vast majority of the time when people say they need a shit-ton of gain, it's because they are playing in madison square bedroom. In real world situations where you would use a 100w tube amp, like a band or recording, no one uses as much gain as forum users do in their mancaves.

Honestly a boost pedal in front of most of these is a honky mid flubby mess without at least some work and revoicing. I’m not saying it can’t be done and yes it will cut in a mix, but it’s a lot of work and requires a lot from you as a player to do it.

The real question is what’s most inspiring to play. Modified Marshall all the way for me - I’ve never played a stock Marshall with a boost pedal that could do more than Van Halen or Ozzy if you’re lucky and have the active pickups. The majority of these outside of the JVM just aren’t enough gain for me.

Enter the DSL tone shift and deep buttons.
And there it is

Idc though . I gave a TSL that just shuts on many 800s . That’s why I keep it .
I think why mines so goo is because my amp tech is our 80 year old Mayor lol fr
So I asked him what he biases it to
He said idk I just do it by ear
Alwsts have
And I’ll tell you . After he got a hold of my Diezel Herbert mk 1 I had him do the same
Just incredible ear
