Not sure where all the headstock tuner rage stems from. Can anyone fill me in? I don't have a pedal tuner, and I don't want to fire up my Axe FX or computer just to check that everything is tuned.

headstock tuners are fine in your home studio or if you are just dinking around

the reasons for the rage are as follows:

1. people not muting their guitars while tuning with headstock tuners on stage
2. headstock tuners make you look like a TGP dork who wears birkenstocks with socks and a tommy bahama shirt while playing "la grange" at the county fair
3. headstock tuners are (for the most part) cheap and inaccurate, although there are some higher quality ones
4. they look like a giant herpe on the headstock of your guitar, which is fine for playing in madison square bedroom, but live performances in front of actual people are about aesthetics

They almost look as bad as a guy staring at his toes to tune then again if you have a pair of Carlos it's not so bad.

Boss didn't release the TU-2 until 1998 and by then I had already owned a POS boss pedal that broke after 3 months so it wasn't in the cards for me. I do remember bands hauling lights, smoke machines, 48 chan consoles, rack gear, snake, soundman, and PA stacks to tiny clubs for $350 dollar gigs. I still chuckle about now gig-less dudes who preached about what counted as professionalism back then.

In the mid 90s you had to have a rack unit or a peterson strobe (on stage!)

Everyone used those cheap korg pocket tuners that wasn't "big time" enough to have a rack setup

I wish I still had my strobe tuner that thing was amazing

I had a peterson but preferred the TU2 for stage. As long as it was indoors.

The TU was hated amongst my circles

Could not possibly see the screen if there was any sunlight or bright stage lights, etc etc

I still hate the things, once TC came out with the polytune IMO it became obsolete
