US national average diesel price tops $6 a gallon for first time ever​

Average US diesel prices have surpassed $6 a gallon (3.8 litres) for the first time on record, according to data released on Thursday by price tracker GasBuddy, cited by Reuters.

The milestone follows oil supply disruptions driven by the war on Iran and Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, topping the previous record of $5.85 a gallon set the previous week.

US President Donald Trump has blamed Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky for the ongoing diesel price shock, saying it was a result of Kiev’s attacks on Russian refineries.

Market experts have mainly linked the hike to the conflict in the Middle East and the reignited hostilities between the US and Iran, which have prompted a renewed rise in crude oil prices.

Trump, however, insisted that this was not the case, telling reporters while on a visit to Ireland that the diesel price spike was actually related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The US president said he had already raised the issue with the Ukrainian leader and told him to stop attacking diesel production in Russia.

“Zelensky has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia. Let him go after targets, but not diesel fuel, because he’s causing a shortage of diesel,” Trump asserted, adding that “this isn’t done by the Middle East.”

Diesel being a “trash product” doesn’t mean it’s cheap to make. Modern low-sulfur diesel actually takes quite a bit of refining.

And taxes aren’t why diesel is so expensive. Federal diesel tax is only 6 cents a gallon higher than gasoline. That obviously doesn’t explain diesel being 50 cents or a dollar more.

The big issue is that diesel supplies are tight and refining margins are high. Diesel is also a global commodity with huge demand from trucking, agriculture, industry and shipping.

Sure, cut the tax and diesel gets a few cents cheaper. But pretending taxes are the reason diesel is expensive just doesn’t match the numbers.

As someone who used to drive a f350sd as his commuter…. There’s a lot of tax per gallon. Sticker is right on the pump with the breakdown. But yes taxes play a role. Maybe not a huge factor but it’s still part of it

They lifted the ban on red diesel here because prices are creating problems. Red diesel=exempt from taxes=60 cents a gallon cheaper. Start doing the math on a semi truck that holds 300 gallons and we are talking about a lot of money. 180 bucks per fill up cheaper.

Of course removing the tax would make it cheaper. That doesn't reverse the fact that Trump's retarded Iran war is the reason that prices skyrocketed.

Using the U.S. national average immediately before the Iran war began on February 28, 2026:

Feb. 23: $3.809/gal
Sept. 28: $6.382/gal
Increase: $2.573/gal
Percentage increase: 67.5%

So U.S. diesel has risen about 68% since immediately before the war.
