I've heard these before, and they are SO close! My issue with processors, is that my ears become fatigued quickly with digitally generated gain at high volumes. Why, I have no idea? Same with CD's... I can listen to them up to a certain volume. If I'm going loud, it's album or tape only.

Great playing as usual...

My Chupa can get pretty darn close...but I admit I rarely dial it in for that.

Chupacabra and trusty old BF-2 (they can do more the TNT trick believe it or not lol):

Van Chupa / Save

Now that is some seriously tasty playing!

I totally agree. Loud in the room, I want my real amps. For recording, you can't beat the ease and results of the Axe or Kemper. Hell, I made a Kemper profile of my Cherry Bomb for recording… sounds killer…

It's a damn shame what happened with the Metro Forum. Metro was the most relevant music/gear forum on the net IMO. It was the 'Library of Alexandria' for musicians, and now it's gone! Rig Talk is fun for playing 'grab-ass', generating drama, and GC... Metro was a true source.

There's another forum that's a good source of info, my co-worker told me about it but I forgot the name of it at the moment.

He actually built a Dumble clone based on some schematics we was telling me about there and talking to some of the members....

I don't think that forum is as VH-centric as Metro was though.

From the Feb. 2014 issue of Guitar World:

EVH: "The first album sounded a little better (than the demos), but it still wasn't the way we imagined it should sound. It's very unique sounding. I wouldn't even know how to duplicate it, to tell you the truth".

GW:Don't ever venture into an amp or guitar forum. You'll see page after page of arguments by people who still can't figure it out either.

EVH: "The overall gutiar sound on the first record isn't that difficult to duplicate, but the overall package of how the whole band sounded was not what Alex and I expected it would be. There is so much EMT plate reverb on it, which is something I never had really heard before. It still holds up today to certain extent. It's not in your face or all that heavy, but the songs are great. If you heard us live, we sounded different. We were much heavier, and that's what Alex and I expected to hear on the record."
  Eddy can't even duplicate his tone on the album and preferred their live tone....Classic hahaha

Before Metroamp went down, there were a lot of guys getting super close with just stock equipment and a few tweaks on a 12000 series. Echoplex preamp,1176 compressors....

My Metro 12000 gets very close. VERY. Plus, it is just a great amp. Support George Metropoulos!!!! MetroAmp is going through a tough time with the server issue.

+1,000,000

Tubes also make a huge difference in getting THAT tone.

My Chupa does great VH tone as well, but you gotta run it through a greenback type speaker. I love it through a mix of V30's and G12-65's, but it doesn't get a good Eddie tone unless I plug it into some greenbacks.

I hear ya...my clip was through some blackbacks actually (55hz). Prolly not VH1, but still VHish.

I threw a pair of G12H30 (55Hz) greenbacks into a 2x12 (pine) Cornford cabinet yesterday, and man do they sound good! Way more top-end than I anticipated, and a tight, yet VERY musical bottom-end. These may be the best sounding ceramic Celestion I've ever played through, and they aren't even broken-in yet.

Here's what I changed:
I removed the Vintage 30's, and left the tone controls on the RK100 where they were. After installing the 55Hz greens, I had to roll the treble BACK from 4.5 down to 2 - the presence from 4 to 2.5 - and I actually tuned the bass UP from 1.5 to 2.5! This totally contradicts 75Hz vs 55Hz lore... I'm wondering if the speaker Hz rating has more to do with cabinet resonance? I be loving this! :)

Does anyone know if the greenback covers come off? I want to turn them 180 degrees... Are they glued on? Will the 'mojo' escape if I remove them? I don't want to flip the speaker, because I want the wires to remain out of the way.

He was saying he didn't like the way the album turned out post production. I never saw anything where he said he wanted to duplicate it. Funny though because this topic of people wanting to cop that VH1 is so over-hyped and discussed to death.

For anyone who likes Eddie (especially the new sober Eddie) this interview is very refreshing. The basic premise is the 30th anniversary of the album 1984 - and the detail he provides regarding each song is really worth reading. I appreciate the album even more now. He discusses most of the earlier albums as well. Great gread.

"Drop Dead Legs" being inspired by AC/DC's "Back In Black", for example.

I bet it was the Amp Garage.. Some very knowledgeable builders there.. Slo Clone forum has some sharp guys there too.

For those of you with Metro12000 and Atomica amps, try a trio of Sylvania 12ax7wa... Such a huge difference in the quality of tone than what they come with imho.

Yep

Another example was how Allan Holdsworth was a huge influence on him, especially at the time. The outro solo to 'Drop Dead Legs' was parcelled in after the fact and the random jazz noodling was Holdsworth inspired.

The basic concept behind the 5150 studio was to give Eddie more control and Templeton less control. Ed wanted to show Ted that he could make a better album than Ted could. 1984 was essentially the 'coming out' showcase of the 5150 studio.
