listen to those clips from Japan the other day, the band is tuned down, presumably to spare Roth's voice, and yet he's still reaching beyond what he needs to do. Makes no sense! Just sing it like on the records Dave. It's easier on your voice, and it will sound way better! Someone needs to intervene, and soon, because he's killing them up there.

I know they did at least through Fair Warning, but think VH has always tuned down a 1/2 step in the Roth era stuff.

Yeah, a 1/2 step down on the recordings, for the most part anyway. I haven't tried to play along with those Japan clips, but it definitely sounds lower than 1/2 step down to me.

I dig the new EVH striped Wolfgang!

Me too

Looks like a relic'd custom...

As far as the performance, the ones toward the end of the show sounded good to me. They sounded like a band that hasn't played in awhile and needed a little time to warm up (like my band last night; haven't practiced in 3 months   ). As far as Roth goes; he's always been hit or miss. It doesn't matter to me. I just like seeing/hearing Ed playing well again.

Wow, Roth seems way off in the hot for teacher clip, and Eddie doesn't sound his usual either. I saw them last year in nj and I thought it was a great show. They were all playing with passion and looked to be having a hell of a good time and Roth sounded much much better then that jap show clip. To say that these guys shouldn't play anymore just because they aren't as tight as in 78 is just foolish.

As far as any of them go, it doesn't matter to me as well. It's always been about listening to Eddie for me.

DLR was,is and always will be a stage clown...
Ed's playing is getting better and better...
i wish he could convince Sammy to come back to the group...
Even his wife(VH band-family) could sing and perform better than DLR...

I'll go again. There will be a day we will never hear a note from a guitar from Eddie again, so I'm taking in what I can.
This x a million. Saw them once live. With Sammy Hagar. No, Sammy; I don't want to hear "Where Eagles Drive 55" or whatever great voice but absolute sh*t lyrics piece of crap you mistakenly think the audience wants to hear. I want to hear the old school VH I grew up with.

I liked 5150 and bits and pieces of Hagar era for sure; but DLR-era is where it's at for me. His voice is shot but I don't care, just want to hear Ed rip on that guitar. There will come a day, as Rogue said; where hearing EVH live won't be an option. That will be a sad day indeed.

After reading my spaz rant right below yours, I could see where it would be misinterpreted   Sammy has a good voice for sure, I just like DLR-era, song-wise. That coupled with my single VH live experience hearing 3 Lock Box instead of Light Up the Sky kind of cemented my bitterness towards Van Hagar. No offense meant!
