Hot Dayum, Amsterdam! They were really on fuggin point here. That song for me represents the best of the hagar era. Wham Bam!!

What i like about van halen is the music evolved as i was getting older.

From the early days rawness and energy to their 90s style. I remember when the grunge movement hit hard, van halen was still there keeping that good rock music alive without that darker mood vibe that terminated most 80s hair netal band. Van halen was my music shelter back in those days.

Here is another cool one! Cool to EVH rocking a Peavey Wolfgang and using some kind of rotary effect for the solo.

Remember seeing all those live. I still hate the lyrics to Amsterdam. But looking back, Balance was a really solid album. Each Sammy era album was a further incremental departure from the Classic VH era, but still good in its own right.

Love hurts you sometimes ...

It's not easy to find ......

Searching every where, you turn and swear ....

It's always been there ....

That actually kicks ass!

I am going to have to revisit my van Hagar cds.

Amsterdam kicks ass in every aspect. Totally solid song. IMHO, the Sammy era stuff doesn't hold up as well as the Dave ear stuff, mostly because of the so juvenile lyrics. But the musicianship is solid across both eras. No question. How awesome would it be to have Dave era footage of them playing those old tunes on Johnny Carson? Just didn't exist.

Sammy has a good voice but he ruined the best band that ever was.

I was never the biggest Van Halen fan to begin with, but yeah, this is accurate. It completely changed the band into something soft like... pussy rock as my friend would say. I do like the Right Now song though.

most bands change and evolve over time. haven't we all realized that by now, especially as musicians ourselves?

theres neeeeever been a time where you're tastes have changed???

why is this so hard for fans to deal with?

do you really think Sammy came to the ego maniac ass VH brothers, and told THEM how shit was going to be?

I think Ed and Alex, moreso Ed pretty much ran the band and was sick of Dave's shit and Dave thought he was Van Halen so those egos just could no longer tolerate one another. It's evident they( Ed/ Alex) treated Michael Anthony as a stand in bass player and not a full member of VH and that's why Sammy and Mike became such good friends as they were outsiders to their own band. I think Van Halen itself caused the breakup and there was no stopping it. I don't blame Sammy at all. He was invited to come sing after Ed jammed with him at FarmAid and at the time they all said it was a good fit.

Eddie wanted to take the band in a new direction which he certainly did whether we liked it or not and at that point I don't think Ed cared that it didn't sound like old Van Halen. I didn't really love the Van Hagar in 1986-1995 I kept hoping it would sound like old VH and it never did. So onward ten years or so I listened again with an open mind and found Ed's genius in those songs as well.....Yeah Sammy was going for POP radio or that's just how he was writing those days and maybe Ed was too but I doubt Ed cared about the radio play, he had enough money already.

Bands in the spotlight especially evolve.

Thinks of any songs you've written and/or played live. Now imagine playing them on thousands of stages over 40 years. No sane person (obviously excludes Yngwie) would play the exact same thing thousands of times. :dunno:

I can always tell when it's mid 90s.....even Mustaine, Metallica, Van Halen, were wearing flannel on stage! :ROFLMAO: The peer pressure was immense......

One thing I really like about the '90s was how Edwards starting playing very tasty solos with his newly discovered neck pickup. Guys like Petrucci could play anything Edward played exactly, but not with the same feel. No contest.

Well that definitely excludes Von Gaylen because they have been playing some version of a cranked plexi or slo shredder playing over this their entire career

This is literally what all this shit sounds like to me, including the out of tune guitar
