Van Halen Panama tone

Mine doesn't do the treble crash at all. The 30k is enough to prevent it I guess.

It's definitely worth trying the 50k. It is pretty cool. My 69 has the original red dye on the mid pot solder joints or else I'd try it on that amp. Perfectly happy with the 30k though.

There was no Mooer baack when I starting using the BOss PS-5's I got Kent Carlevi's setting off of You-tube and have been pretty satisfied with its detunes. I would love to pick up an eventide picthfactor to get the exact -.9999cents for FW 1984 tones and +-9 cents for Balance type detune because the Boss only does -5cents at a time, but it's close enough for me. The new Eventide micropitch pedal might be interesting though, but i need stereo two channels like the pithcfactor.

I think Jayy used to be here on RT has an actual Eventide 910 and he has some killer detune clips through a bunch of amps

I've heard great things about the Mooer as well.

Do you remember what the Kent Carlevi PS-5 settings are? And did he run it it on mono?

Can't help with the Panama thing, but I do agree a nice vintage NMV Marshall pushed through Pulsonics is a thing of beauty. I have a 72 SuperTremolo with the matching 72 Pulsonic cab....no amp that I have (Cam Jose/Aldrich/Clean 78 SL, C+ Coli, Triple F) can match that combo for pure raw rock tone. Including the Wizard MCI I had, which was also amazing.
Do you really hear the detune on that track though? I'll have to give it another listen...I only really noticed it when 5150 came out.
You can hear detune on Fair Warning too if you listen closely with headphones.

By that era of VH we (80's kids) had pretty much wrote them off. Between cheesy covers, albums with 8 songs and only 2 were meh, we were into Maiden Dokken, Ratt, Dio ect
VH I and I tone was the pinnacle

Carlevi ran his mono with the -10 cent setting on the PS-5. He gave all his settings somewhere on the video responses years ago and wrote them down somewhere but I have those exact settings still set on my PS-5 I keep around so I'll snap a pic for you. If you have a W/D/W setup you can also run a 2nd PS-5 for the +10 cent setting, -10 cent for the left and +10 for the right. I ran PS-5's for years until I broke down and purchased an Eventide Pitchfactor for my W/D/W setup. The Boss PS-5 does cent increment in 5 cent divisions, this is teh -10 cent setting in the pics. The PS-5 sounds very good for detune.

There is some truth to that but I respectfully disagree... VHII, WACF, Fair Warning, DD all had killer songs even with the cheesy covers. 1984 was still good but it had lost some of that early edge and was somewhat polished. Lightning is never the same twice I guess.:dunno:

Thanks! Do you remember if he shared his Tonelab presets? I could have sworn he did years ago but I can’t find them.

You're welcome. I think he did list his presets about the Tonelab but I don't know where those are at, sorry I can't help there.

It may or may not have been "Frankie" for 1984. I know that the Kramer 5150 guitar came in during that time frame. That guitar was made from poplar with a maple neck. So, poplar or alder for the body will get you close. I have gotten some very mid 80s VH tones from the Duncan Custom Custom in my Charvel. You can pick up a used Eventide H9 for cheap. Either the H910 or H3000 algorithms will get you EVH. The 910 would be more era correct. I believe that there is a Drop Dead Legs preset in the H9 from the factory.

They had less time writing together, hated each other (Dave n Ed), were spun out on snow, Ed wanted keys Dave didn't ect. All that effected song writing or lack thereof so as a fan in in HS at the time we wanted so badly to be wowed by new material and like you said aside from a few outlier tunes it was 'meh' I'll listen to Maiden or go see Dokken opening for Dio!
Truth be told I'm salty about anything called Panama because either wanker on Yt plays that riff :ROFLMAO:

I have a PS-6 somewhere in the mail. The settings are similar! I also have an Eventide MicroPitch (which I know) offers more options but wanted to have a more compact detune pedal

I would have to agree. It may be sacrilegious around here, but I was never a big Iron Maiden or Dio fan :dunno:

And I thought 1984 was killer. Tone for days. Yes, Jump and Panama are over played but Drop Dead Legs and Girl Gone Bad? Forget about it. With the hindsight of the things @cragginshred brought up it makes the album even more impressive. For me. With Fair Warning tied as my fav VH album. But I admit I got super into Dokken and Ratt when that shit came out - mostly because of the tone (vs the cheesy songs and androgyny). YMMV

the H910 / H949 algo in the H9 pedal has a 1984PANAMA preset:

1984 was the pinnacle at least production-wise for the Dave era and also for connecting with a wider audience without sacrificing artistic integrity.

VH is one of those bands that was so established that they didn't have to give a fuck about future trends such as Grunge, etc., and they didn't become a nostalgia act after having their big radio hits. They simply played whatever they wanted.

EVH was still at peak creativity when they recorded 5150 and touched it again briefly when they made the two songs with DLR (Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More). But their cultural peak was 1984, their presence was so MASSIVE at that time!

Frankie was never his main guitar in the studio.

1984 is my favorite album after the 1st one. Ed's creativity was at its peak. The leads were so unique and bizzarly cool. Even the one he did on Beat it was off the rails compared to normal 80's metal or hard rock solos.

I love 1984; VH1 is one of those unique religious masterpieces because of the impact it had when it came out and being the first, but that’s usually not my preferred one to listen to today.
