My favorite sounding albums are ones that sound like a band playing in a room together. So very live sounding, some mic bleed, etc. So lots of stuff from the 60s and 70s would qualify. One that I was just listening to today that has that vibe is the first Gov't Mule record.
If you don't have it, you'd probably dig Badlands "Dusk". It totally has that cut live in the studio sound/vibe to it.

Arch Enemy - Stigmata
Iron Maiden - Brave New World & Dance Of Death
Caliban - The Opposite From Within
Carcass - Heartwork
Ratt - Dancing Undercover
Guthrie Govan - Erotic Cakes
Eric Johnson - Venus Isle
Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
In Flames - The Jester Race
The Absence - Riders Of The Plague
Wow! I was just getting ready to throw Dancing Undercover out there.

In terms of heavy music:

Devin Townsend Band - Accelerated Evolution
Queensryche - Empire

 Queensryche Empire-imho their best production to date.
I usually find pieces of albums to use as references.

Soundgarden Superunknown-imho a PERFECT vocal mix. Very up front, but not steping on anything.

Jorn The duke- great production. Kind of classic hard rock with modern tones.

Ray Gillen was one of the all time greats imo.

I always liked Extreme's III Sides to Every Story for being so lush.

Waiting for the Punchline was a shock for me since it was soooo dry and in your face, but years later, I like it more than ever.

Jason

Megadeath Cryptic Writings, love the bass and drum sound on that record, and the guitar ain't too bad either :D

sonically speaking,

vh I
giant
toy matinee
sting
landau "tftb"
ej venus isle
srv little wing
nuno "graphitti"
steely dan "two against nature"

acdc black was a cool dry album, but i prefer cry of love "brother" or badlands debut album for that kind of thing

and just to thrill digijams....vai's "bad horsie" (just the first 30 seconds or so....as soon as he hits the dopey wah wah melody, game over)

and one departure from anything guitar i always use as a reference track for live or studio systems i'm trying to feel out..

quincy jones "the secret garden (sweet seduction)" although i sure wish Q had used two female soul legends to join barry white and james ingram instead of al b sure and el debarge

diana krall live in paris is also great

You forgot Blue Powder Pat ;)

Sting really went all out with his first solo album and when you have Darrel Jones and Omar Hakim nailing down the rhythm section and know something good is going to happen.

Thanks guys, now I am on a Queensryche kick.

Hear in the Now Frontier is very dry, but very well put together. Best sounding QR album to my ears.

Tower of Power - What is Hip? sounds amazing

Living Colour - Vivid

Rush - Snakes and Arrows (studio) - check out The Main Monkey Business

Billy Squire. Don't Say No. Crank up Lonely Is The Night, the production of that song just begs it to be CRANKED.

YES. 90125. Production at it's best.

Boston's first album. WAY ahead of it's time in terms of production. Sounds better than albums that came out 10 years after it.

AC/DC. Back In Black. What else can one say. Perfect rock album.

Def Leppard. Hysteria. Probably too much production. It sounds to good that it often comes off as fake sounding.

Eric Johnson. Ah Via Musicom. Such sweet guitar tones.

Iron Maiden. Peace Of Mind. Perfect crunchy metal tones, great vocals.

Dokken. Under Lock And Key. Lead tone of the Gods.

blue powder was my fave vai song for his inspired playing and uncharacteristically thick tone...not so much for production value..

sting songs like fortress around my heart and fragile have great sounds.

journey raised on radio was also good and big. mindcrime good, queen of the ryche not so good.. :D
