What CAN'T you do on guitar?

IC. I wish I could "fake it" that well, lol. There is so much stuff I can't do. I know how to do it, but my fingers just don't want to coordinate with the brain.
 
There's a couple, although it's a stretch to say I "cant" - i'm not completely awful at anything. I've practiced way, way too hard for way too long

I'm way less good at sweeping and string skipping than most of the other "advanced" techniques, although I can do a bit of both.

Those two are nowhere near up to par with my rhythm playing, vibrato, alternate picking speed, and tapping though, all of which I would say i'm pretty advanced at, even relative to RT which has some good players

If it comes to non-guitar stuff that's where it gets real - I have a very limited vocal range, for example

I know how to do a lot of techniques, but can't pull them off cleanly. Skipping and arps are something I practice but can't get smooth enough to use in writing. I can keep good time from a lot of practice as a little kid and piano, but that's about it. Singing forget it, I sound like like a canary under a blanket. My voice gets lost with any noise. My son on the other hand... he sings for the Empire State Youth Orchestra and got scholarships for singing at a few local colleges. I have NO idea where he got that talent. His mother, god bless her soul, is tonedeaf, lol.

This is so relatable for me. Haha

When people tell me that I’m a “good guitar player”, usually I thank them, and tell them they just haven’t seen an actually good guitar player before.

I'm more of a "Stay in my lane" type - I tend to stick to what i'm good at, until I "build it up" enough to add it to my writing

I've JUST gotten to the point recently to be comfortable adding my alternate picking stuff into solos, it took me years and years because I didn't think I had it "down" good enough. And even then, there are certain tempos where I feel awkward with it

I have a million other techniques I can do arpeggios with, so I don't feel limited by not being great at full 6 string sweeps. Generally speaking, I can pull off the yngwie 3 string style arpeggios well enough to where I don't feel like it's super necessary.

That's probably why I haven't gotten that great at it tbh :dunno:

I'm still not comfortable alternate each way. I can go up fine, down I feel like I'm running in clown shoes, lol. I find arps are very hard to incorporate tastefully, and there aren't a lot of guitarists I really like using them. Loomis and Marty are a couple that come to mind, but it's not easy to be tasteful and restrained with those.

if you can only go one direction, it's the direction youre slanting your pick generally.

Have you ever tried paul gilberts "inside outside" lick?

This is a really common issue, and with well known stuff to practice to fix it.

I used to only be able to shred descending (and i'm still more comfortable that way) literally because of the way I hold my pick

U gotta be able to do it all, inside, outside downward/upward pick slant ect
 
I got to a strange place where I stopped using a pick and used my right hand first finger nail as a pick, and I sometimes find myself not realizing I am doing it. I don't know why that happened

eh, I have several friends that just jam out power chords in complete bliss. If that rocks your boat, I'm all for it. :dunno:

i do ok, it happened before i started really playing so i just kinda learned around it, but yeah im kind of limited lol
 
I struggle with descending triplets & arpeggios.

I can pull them off decently, in small bursts, if I take a few measures & really work at them for a while. But they’ve never been something I could incorporate smoothly.
