@CarlF - cool thread man. Glad you decided to stick around with us

@RaceU4her - Wow man, you are already my favorite player on here and I had no idea about your nub. Good on you.

I got to a strange place where I stopped using a pick and used my right hand first finger nail as a pick, and I sometimes find myself not realizing I am doing it. I don't know why that happened

That's actually how I started. A pick was like a foreign object to me

I’m good at playing it in a certain way, and that way doesn’t involve any of those techniques, which I really can’t do well at all
Is it alternate picking if I go back and forth between a thumbpick and fingerpick? That's as close as I can get to it.

Alternate picking, especially with right hand muting. Sure wish I could rip out those Gary Moore runs but I never disciplined myself to get it. Any attempt at speed on scale type stuff for me is extremely random and haphazard and usually degenerates into a lot of hammer on pull off mixed in. The stuff I’ve seen about where you’re up and down positioning should be on the pick as you go feels like wearing the wrong shoes on the wrong feet.
Also hybrid picking and Fingerstyle for more Rockabilly stuff. Love the sound of it but because I’ve mostly been a hard rock, AC/DC kind of guy I never dived into it like I should have.
…and Slide.

I can never get loud enough. I almost bought another full stack this week. I'm like Trump; I want to build a wall.

The alternate picking stuff isn't as hard or as time consuming as you would think - it's more about engineering the lick around the picking style that you use/that's comfortable for you, and then practicing it, after you've figured out the mechanical part of it

The reason it's commonly considered "time consuming" to get good at, is because people are generally flying blind and trying to randomly make licks like that happen, when there's nothing random about it

If you can figure out where your escape motion is (up or downstroke) and whether you favor inside or outside string changes, the woodshed/practice time you put in starts actually mattering and making huge gains

What I cant do?....man, I think id need a couple of sides of A4 at least...

I guess at the moment its all economy of movement...

There is a lot that I cannot do and it would fill a book. But I have gotten older and mellower and embraced my limitations more. There are many things I will simply never achieve although I still do learn things and develop stuff (albeit at a much slower rate). I guess I enjoy the journey more nowadays.

I’m still waiting to hear more about the 3 finger pick grip??

Probably from being naturally left-handed. My right hand is my weak hand, so it was the most natural way for me to hold the pick.
I know Steve Morse holds the pick with 3 fingers as well. At least he used to.

I can't sweep pick, don't really care to either though. I'm also not so great at pinch harmonics... I can get them occasionally but I think the way I hold the pick hinders that ability.

Same I have to switch my pick grip on the fly to do pinch harmonics on the bottom strings.

I can get them fine on the higher strings, but I can't do the deathcore/zakk wylde thing without changing my grip, so that means it doesn't show up often in my playing unless i'm purposely making a choice to do it
