what delay to use with hi-gain

I have never heard of a delay that does not sound good with highgain. I do know delay before gain often sounds bad.

What's a good delay for going straight into a high gain amp?

The Carbon Copy seems to work well in the front of higher gain amps. You'll never get the clarity of a delay in a loop, but the CC does a decent job out front. Sounds great in a loop too, of course.

The Carbon Copy is still my favorite with high gain or low gain for that matter. I've owned or still own a DL4, Strymon DIG and El Capistan, and have used some of the TC stuff, vintage Boss DD-3 and Eventide Timefactor.

They all have strengths but for high gain the CC is my go-to. It's warm and doesn't mess with the core tone or feel. I guess you could say it stays out of the way and adds a bit of space.

The Flashback X4 and Boss were cool with high gain too. I feel that the Strymon stuff is much better with more clean and semi dirty tones. The El Cap and even more so the DIG can sound great with gain when set up in a very basic way, but with no presets this is almost a waste when they are capable of so much more. Damn, didn't mean to write so much!

I was using the Carbon Copy, but the Belle Epoch forced the CC to my 'B' board. Both sound great, but at the end of the day I prefer the tape delay sound over the analog delay sound with high gain. It has more settings to tweak via the larger number of control pots, so I found it easier to get more of the sound in my head, if you will.

I use the G-Lab SD-1 Smooh Delay and I love it for my SLO, Uberschalls or my Archon!!!

I feel it's definitely one of the best delay pedals I've ever used...works especially well with fx's loops that are noisy or don't usually take pedals at all or very well! It's NOT a noisy delay at all but has a great warm tone!!

I've had many and still use a DD-5 with the Boss tap tempo pedal. FU-5? and TC Nova Repeater.
Carbon Copy is great.
My personal preference is digital delay. I prefer pristine repeats. Others don't, both work fine.

I was never a fan of the 2290. Expensive, unreliable/unfixable, outdated when it comes to MIDI and with a bright basic tone that really draws attention to it. Beautiful modulation, though, with that flipped-phase dual mono thing going on. I´m much more in the Lexicon camp with diffusion and heavier filtering. But I guess it boils down to how you use your delays.

Boss DD2 is next for me to try though.

I bought the DD500 and I'm not sure if it's going to be a keeper yet.
