What's the best high gain amp you've played?

So far the Bogner Uber Twin Jet, however I have a Diezel VH4S coming soon, so there may be a new best in town.

Really tough call here, probably can't go with just one. I've tried most at one point or another, at the end of the day:

Diezel Herbert
Wizard MC 100

Very different amps...But the absolute best at what they do (in my opinion).

I've been running a CAE 3+ SE/SM100R setup for a long time now. I can't ever really see myself replacing it, and I've heard most of the contenders and flavors of the month.

Its a really tough choice between a Mako Dorado and a 5150 212 combo for me.

Why would you ever replace that rig?! Very nice!

The only real downside is weight - my studio is down a flight of stairs and apparently I don't rate a roadie :D That and the SM100R is kinda hard on power tubes.

In terms of how it sounds, I've never found anything else that's as nice. There's very few high gain amps with good, let alone great, cleans and low gain tones. And no one else seems to have captured that weird feel the SLO power section has.

A tie between VH4 and Herbert. I also like 5153, Invader and Savage a lot.

Overall I like my VHT Pittbull Classic combo. Very hi-fi yet responsive and expressive. Very versatile. I would like to purchase a CLX and ditch the combo, but that's a story for another back.

I've never tried any Uberschall but tried an Ecstasy 101B at length. Great amp. I've tried the Diezel Hagen and Einstein at length. The Einstein sounded better than the more versatile Hagen, and both were damn fine amps but I found myself missing the Pittbull Classic. I owned a Roadster and just couldn't gel with it even with a Mills AB412 with Vintage 30's. I owned a Pittbull UL which was nice but lacked the richness of the Classic. There was just something missing. Absolutely wonderful amp but maybe a little too hi-fi for me. It didn't inspire me. Also didn't sound as good recorded.

For straight hi-gain, the only amp that has really given a lot of competition to the Classic has been my D120. Putting them together is pretty magical. The way I see the D120 is it's like Adam Jones' Marshall sound on Opiate and Undertow. Dark (I set my treble at 0), very mean, and tight.

Darkhorse amp totally below the price range of all of the amps in this thread: Carvin X-100B. Very punchy, very clear, and very nice overall.

Amps I really want to try: VH4, Uberschall, Trem-O-Verb.

In no particular order: Mako Mak4 / Diezel Herbert / Diezel D-Moll

Obviously this one:

next runner up was a Bogner modded 69 Superbass that I regrettably sold.

Best in as far as doing it all?

Mesa Boogie Road King II

Best bang for the buck?

5150 III 50 watt

For me? For truly "high gain" (which eliminates my Wizard), I'd have to go with the SLO. I mean, come on! Right?...

Those would be the 2 I have had that I would pick. (Wizard Metal)

I've never played a real one, but I'm kinda surprised by this: has anyone said the Mark IIC+? I thought they were considered one of the grail amps. Just surprised it's gotten so few (if any?) mention in this thread. Maybe because they're hard to come by.

Lots of love for the SLO and VH4. And deservedly so.

My EVH. It's the tone I always had in my head. For me it's literally perfection.

3rd on my list of gainers.

Bogner über Rev2! Vh4 and TJ. I'm hoping to get a peters hydra amp.

VH4
Uberschall

I've played a couple SLO-100s over the years, but I've never been able to get "high-gain" out of one. Granted, I wasn't able to really crank them up loud. And maybe I just didn't know how to set the knobs???? But they always struck me as more of a mid-gain type of amp. I've heard them on records, boosted, though.

Some amps that I think I would like that I've never been able to find and play:

Ultralead
Peters
Mako
