Never tried the Audix, but from what i heard in clips they sound a bit scooped to me, right?I have a bunch of mics, not sure I really have a favorite but I usually start with my Audix D2 dead center.

Guess i'd rather use ninety SM57, all at onceIf I'm doing Gojira pick scrapes....U47 all day

I got rid of my 421. But 57/421 is a classic combo for a reason. I think they work better together on Speakers like the V30 and maybe a Greenback.SM57 & MD421; play some white noise through the amp, place them where they sound loudest & clearest, tweak a little if needed.
I have other cab mics around that i should probably sell, since I never use them.
Both cool. I had a Fredman clip for a while too. What is "the edge of the dustcap" in your book? Half Dustcab, half Cone?If I want a more "modern" sound I generally use two 57s in a fredman clip (one straight on, one 45 degrees)
If I want to sound more late 80s/early 90s (thrashy) I will use a 57 on the edge of the dustcap and a 421
Sheet-MetalI use one of these loosely thrown inside the speaker cab. It sounds metal as all hell.

Interesting.57 middle of cone
Lewitt MTP440 middle of cone
SE VR1 ribbon mic dead center
Going to add a condenser at some point, 414 or something like it.
Nice and easyA 121 about an inch away from the grill cloth

This is the way. I had way pricier mics like a royer 121 paired with the 57 and the 421 just always got used. E906 is also good but again the 57 and 421 just got the use
Yep, this is one of those situations where it's the "standard" for a reason.
Ultimately i found a single 57 to be clearer.same here

Will check it out. Thanks. Did you try the new Shure Guitar Mic?The D2 has a little scoop, the D4 and i5 not so much. heres a comparison i did a while back
this is my DSL 100h with everything at noon, each mic is right on the center of a T75 in the 1960. i changed nothing but the mics, just two raw tracks left and right. the order is:
57
D2
D4
421
Uni57
samson Q7
audix i5
hope this helps some of you out

Ok, i see. Yes, of course.Somewhere around thereYou start half and half, and adjust by ear to taste
There is no one-size-fits-all because amps, speakers, etc are different and require different solutions
Even when you get them phase aligned to like 1 sample, theres always some kind of phase cancellation.single 57 works for some tones, not for others
Generally speaking, though, you need to absolutely MASTER the single 57 and micing before you can start adding mics and it becomes additive instead of muddying things up
What Mic did he use?I will never forget when I was playing a show, I was using a Mesa .22+ into a 4x12, I was getting nothing from the monitors so I looked back and he mic'ed the combo instead of the cab lmao
Sm57What Mic did he use?![]()
