What's your go to Mics and Placement?

Usually all on the cone up against the edge of the dust cap. It all depends on what you’re recording. I mostly plat A440 rock with Marshall tones that are fairly cutting so on the dust cap is overkill on the top end. Also depends on the speaker you’re using. A G12H30 Anniversary is very bright and a Creamback 75 is also fairly bright. I would probably go even a little more away from the dust cap on those or at least angle the 57 a little. But I don’t use those typically for a Marshall and stick with a GB or my F70.
Thanks for the Info. I agree :)
Ever tried the e906 for that kind of stuff, or maybe even the Shure SM7B?

I didn't like any of these sounds...
Yeah there was a lot of bad sounds in that video. I do not think it is likely to get good results without optimizing the mic position. Just putting it on the dust cap is rarely going to be ideal.

I would also advise against making too much use of angling. It might occasionally give good results, but the frequency response becomes increasingly odd as you go off-axis. It's not just a tool to compensate for excessive hype.

It's worth mentioning the SM75 is not one mic. A USA Unidyne III, a Mexican SM57, and a Chinese SM57 are pretty radically different as they implemented intentional cost cutting steps and did re-tuning to increase hype with each production transition. I realize lots of people use them, but I do not consider the Mexican or Chinese SM57 to be a professional mic. I feel the same way about the MD-421-II.

Blending mics can in theory be useful, but often times it's really just an admission that there's something wrong with both mics. Given the availability of numerous mics that reproduce a wide frequency range well, I question the value of piecing a solution together from multiple parts. I think it's no coincidence that the over-hyped modern SM57 is so commonly blended.

My favorite for years (cabinet) has been SM57 & R-121 Mic placement standard 57 edge, 121 center then by ear. I do get great results, takes practice.
