I thought it was a good idea to record the a few common SM57 placements and put them in a single clip.

What's your favorite, if any? Please use Headphones.
0:00 Dust Cap/Cone
0:42 Inside Dust Cap
1:25 Andy Sneap
2:07 Dead Center
2:50 Dead Center 5cm away
3:33 Dead Center 10 cm away
4:15 Dead Center 15cm away
 
You shouldn't be using a fixed placement, you should be moving it to where it sounds the way you want it (ideally in a rough mix, not solo) by ear.

It's also pretty difficult to tell the small differences in a miced sound with this type of guitar tone :dunno:

At least to me, it's very hard to hear the difference between the mic placements with that much gain and tuning that low, but that's just me

Yeah, they all go chuggity chug, some do it it with a little more fiz. I can't really say I prefer one to another.

Placements at least partway out on the cone are completely legitimate. You don't have to be near the dust cap. In this case I'm not thinking it would be a huge improvement, more of just a general statement.

Placements anywhere can be completely legitimate, it just depends on the context

I think i'm just not qualified to comment on this (simon's) context because I would do a vastly different type of tone for a low tuned chugga type thing

I can barely tell the difference between them except "slightly more high end when it's straight on the cone" and basic stuff like that
