Which Doom Tone do you like better?

1 is definitely clearer in the mix that's for sure. 2 is a bit more 'modern' sounding with more power in the bass, reminds me of the tone I hear from bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep. I think I would like it better if it wasn't clipping my amp. My amp is solid state and so it doesn't do well with a heavily clipped input signal. It makes that oversaturated sizzle regardless of which pedal is acting as a high gain clipper. I think if I had a JCM 800 that pedal would really shine in front of it. My other distortion pedal too.

I prefer #1.

The second one gets too clouded by the extra bass, almost like the amp crumples up in the throat and can't roar.

I love your choice of song though! Haha I'm gonna post the video clip again :D

Even with a shitty YouTube audio compression- you can hear how the bass guitar is very prominent in the mix. It's what gives the distorted guitars their power, so they can scream over the top.

Still though you're making me homesick for my JCM800! I wanna go back home and crank it up!

First one sounds best,full,clear,2nd sounds clumpy and fizzy,to much gain.

I've been listening to this song at least once every day for the last two weeks, it's unhealthy. I think it's the most perfect metal song ever written and recorded, but that's just me. I also love 'Darkness in Paradise' from their earlier days, that gets a frequent listen as well. They're a terribly underrated band. It's really too bad Metallica came around and started writing much better riffs

I think you are right about the tones. The 'crumbly' 'choking' thing was cool in the room while jamming at high volume but under a mic it's really easy to see where the tone is lacking. It really makes me want a JCM 800 that's for sure!

Number 1 sounded like a generic metal tone to me but #2 instantly made me think Doom. Maybe number 2 is the intro tone and number 1 is when the band kicks in, mixed with #2.

Haha I've been listening to it on and off for the last four months! I had a break from it for the last week and a half but then got back into it again!

If you can get a JCM800 in good nick (some aren't, hence why so many get modded I believe), then it'll kick arse! I actually have a fuzz/low gain OD pedal too but haven't tried it yet with the JCM800. I don't really need to coz I use my MarkIV for the super high gain crunch and the JCM800 is more for the bark (I use it unboosted).
The fuzz pedal itself chokes REALLY bad when playing heavy riffs on the low strings- like a really bad sag. Sounds awesome though for single notes on the higher strings, or rolling the guitar's volume down for some fuzzy gritty cleanish sounds.

Speaking of Metallica, I'll see them in concert before playing my JCM800... :( Next week I go straight from work to holidays including two 'tallica shows, then back to work for two weeks- a whole month to wait....

Thanks for the feedback all. Due to the inadequacies of this comparison I am planning a new comparison which will hopefully level the playing field. I've realized that only the lead channel does that oversaturation thing and the clean channel does not, even with the gain turned up, so I will see if I can dial the amp for that. More to come.

I like 1 a little more than 2 but maybe a mix of both would be cool.
