Which eq pedals are the ticket?

6, 7, or 10 band???

Parametric??

Or What?
I can't say with authority because I'm not an EQ expert. What I will say is I have been very impressed with @griff10672 Pultec EQ. Pedalboard friendly, and exceedingly powerful controls gave me the control I was after. My long game includes ordering a 2nd one from him because I am so pleased. Gotta have backups!

It's not just the number of bands, it's what frequencies are selected for each band, whether the Q is variable depending on position of the control, all kinds of stuff.

For boosting an amp, it's a tie between the Boss GE-7 and the Peppers Dirty Tree, TC Side.
For extra EQ flexibility in the loop, my favorite pedal is the Master Effects EQFH.

EQ pedals I own:
Boss GE-7
Master Effects EQFH
Peppers Dirty Tree
Empress Para EQ mkii
MXR 10-band
Mesa 5-band

The EQFH is only a 3-band EQ, but it doesn't really need much more than that because it's parametric, so you can put those three bands anywhere you want. The frequency and the Q controls have a very wide sweep so you can kinda do anything with them. If you need a post EQ with more than three bands, I'd honestly just recommend getting two of them to run in series. The pedal doesn't add distortion so series vs parallel doesn't matter. That'll give you 6 bands to work with, which is plenty if not outright overkill for anything you'd want to do from a pedalboard.

The Mesa 5-band is fun but it's tuned in such a specific and recognizable way that it makes every amp sound pretty much like a Mark. Cool if you want that sound, but that's what it does.

Using in front of the amp or in the loop?

Running up front, I really like this one. They’re a bit pricey for what you get, and it’s kind of a pain to catch them when they’re in stock, but it sounds great.

Honestly tried the 10 Band MXR and the EQ200 by Boss and others too......

iMO nothing is better than the simple MXR 6 band.... It just works and has more cut and boost than even the 10 band or many others.

IMO it's just the best for this reason, it's simple and easy to use and it has a lot more cut and boost than most others as well.

I´ve used the old Boss GE10 for a number of years now. Even something like an EQ pedal has a sound, which I guess is partly the design with the Qs of the bands and center frequencies and what not, and partly just the electronics. The GE10 just sounded right to me, for whatever reason. I don´t do a whole lot of sculpting with it, though, just a smidge of fine tuning to dial in the sound of the guitar I´m using. For boosting the amp I like my Furman PQ4, to my ears it´s easier to dial in the mid push just right with a parametric.

That´s all before the amp/dirt, by the way.

I like my ge7 in front of the amp for tweaking the response a bit. Though I did mod it with ne5532 op amps, replacing the stock jrc022. In its stock form it sounded like a jet engine when used pre-gain. So noisy. Very quiet now.

If I were looking for a new eq today I’d probably go with that Ibanez pentatone eq, that one looks real good.

I also use my axe FX II after my amp quite often for eq, it has a wild amount of eq options, both graphic and parametric.

Boss 10 band eq . The 2000s version . My other ones eat dust

I modded my old GE-7 years ago also. Noise and ACA power conversion.

I really want to try that Ibanez also. It just sucks it doesn't have much boost level available.

This. I have the MXR 6 and 10 bands. The 6 works great as a boost, and the 10 band I use in the loop.

This, from a pure utility perspective it works like a charm and the range of frequencies used are a chefs kiss of tonal delight and offers the perfect sweet spots IMO *_*

Also I like to use an EQ almost like a buffer to get back sound from tone suck.....

In the front of the chain they can work as a great boost but at the end of a chain they boost as well but bring back the tone more subtly.

Definitely mess with placement but IME it's not bad to have it at the end of the chain especially if you have 6-7 or more pedals to get back that lost tone from inevitable tone suck using buffer or even truebypass pedals there is always going to be tonesuck IME no matter how good they are.

This is where a nice EQ at the end of the chain helps IME and IMO.

Same. Sometimes I'll have an eq on at the beginning of the board with just a few db of treble boost to emulate newer sounding strings, hah. But yeah you could do that anywhere in the chain you think would help get back some of the signal loss.

Ah I hadn’t noticed it was only +-10db. That would work for me though, I usually prefer minor adjustments. On my ge7 I hardly ever get past the first line on the sliders. In fact I wouldn’t mind modding it to reduce range.
