Who to mod a Marshall??

I would say Bruce Egnater, but he is probably the busiest guy in the amp business at the moment.

I'd probably say Dave Friedman.

Or buy a good soldering station and do it yourself.

So a lot of you are saying dave friedamn. Call me ignorant, but I do not know much about him. I went to the RacjK Systems website but there was not alowt of info. I suppose I ought to call him. I was leaning towards Soldano. They are nearby and I have always loved the SLO. Maybe Ed D. or David Simpson can chime in. I think they both have owned or played a Soldano Modded superlead. if I remember correct, Ed D raved about that amp.

Any specifics on Dave f or his mods that I can chew on for the eve.?

Thanks,

dave is pretty darn talented and has been under the hood of eddie vh's rig and lynch as well, so you are probably in good hands for those tones!
here is a circuit collaboration he has done with rockstah most recently:

play hi fi version, smile, and thank gainy and me later

insanely great brownish sounds!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

What mod is that Pat?
I know Dave does a few different (weird named) mods... which one is this? This has got to be one of the best clips I've heard for "that tone" ever!

Could be the same one - I sold or traded it to J.B., but I don't know where it went after that.

John Suhr

I am not fond of the OD 100, so Suhr is not an option for me ampwise. Love his guitars though!

I had a Suhr modded Marshall and didn't care for it. The way he develops gain is very unique, very saturated, kind of coarse and boomy in the low end. You could get a pretty cool lead tone out of it that worked well in certain situations, but the rythym tone was terrible, like you were on the neck pickup all the time.

Having said that, I personally would have reservations about sending an amp to Martin Golub, only because he and Suhr worked closely together for years and most likely do similar, if not the same mods.

Not to say either one couldn't do a great job if they knew exactly what you wanted though.

I spoke with both martin and david phillips about the mods they offer..the lead mod that martin does is a totally different design to the original suhr mod.

the best interpretation he said to me was listen to the dio album killing the dragon..and also the live dvd evil or devine..
i asked martin to describe the tone of the mod..basically he said to me that it was kinda like a soldano slo but with a touch more gain and slightly more compressed..

That sound Doug Aldrich gets on the Evil or Devine DVD is insanely good. Doug's guitar sound on the new Whitesnake album is not that good IMO.

Agreed...

Probably the exact same rig tho... Just Coverdale's mix and eq'ing when he did the mix down / production.

Nah....Pluto (Mark) got it from me and had it sent direct to Suhr for a revamp before shipping off to Hawaii. Suhr had indicated that he had drastically changed his thinking on the mod as was previously done - wanted to change things. Mark really liked it when he got it.

how about we put the speculation on hold about Martin Golub, untill me and Darr get our Amps?

Martin has done work for Greenday and several punk bands, plus Tesla, Doug, and a few others on the heavier side.

if we get out amps when we think we will, that will make Martin doing pretty good on turn around time, and they actually answer thier phone and return phone calls! that's more than i've got out of one of the modders mentioned in this thread!

Keith

he names all his experiments so this one was his "plexi tweak 1026H 59"

this was a result of dave f. suggesting to rockstah/mark certain things to change the circuit, and both were so pleased with the results that they mentioned wanting to build this amp and offer it to people.

i kinda feel the same as rufus about my experiences with at least early OD100s and even the diamond series amps.
low end heavy, coarse gain, very unforgiving. i think his more recent direction has been back off the low end and relax the type of gain...landau's classic series used EL-34s and different transformers i suspect in an attempt to tighten up that bottom end and get more marshall plexi.

the diamond has this ON/OFF attack, instead of saggy feathered glassy thing i dig more.

dave friedman was credited with helping bruce egnater design the TOL series back in the day, an amp i LOVE, and more recently he's worked with the Blankenship stuff which i really dig...so like Bruce Eggie and Vic/mojave, my ears agree with Dave's tone directions and vision.

How bout if we don't get all touchy sensitive about stuff period, mmkay ?

i do have to add though that everyone i've ever heard play a OD100 live sounded amazing...except one cat that shall remain nameless

and i LOVE the clips pete thorn and mondoslug did with the badger...me likey where john s. is heading!!

and martin is a great and super knowledgeable guy.

Ho braddah cuz -

I have to say that the Badger is one of the few amps I've owned that I actually miss...that was a bad ass little rig, light years ahead of my Suhr modded Marshall

Dave Friedman

Dave puts together touring rigs for some huge national acts, pretty well respected, and trustworthy. I sent him a randall mod to get modded, and got it back in a weeks time. Here is a video with him working on George Lynch's stuff. He posts on HRI more often.

My vote and my amp are with Friedman.

He is doing my purple plexi Marshall which he received about 4 weeks ago and should be on the way back to me next week.

marshallbarney.jpg

I wanted a high gain head similar to a Cameron but with more violin type sustain and one that would cut in the mix.

My mod at Dave's suggestion is a hybrid between the "Brown Eye" and "Angery Hippie" mods. As I understand it, there is a deep knob on the back and an extra gain stage on a push pull pot so I can go between EVH Brown/Aldrich/Joe Holmes type tones into heavier sounds (Uber Inspired type) with a push pull.

I will post up when it arrives back with a review.

Brad

p.s: Dave is also building my new rack system around a Bogner Fish, Axe-FX Ultra and VHT 2/50/2 so I trust him!

Friedman also had a hand in both the Naylor and Budda SD designs.

I have a feeling that most of these guys, including Suhr, could probably do whatever you wanted them to do tone and feature-wise if they were so inclined. My worry is always that, being a nobody on the wrong coast, I would send my amp to somebody in cali and not see it again for four years.

yep, the wait thing is a major concern/gripe with me. seems like some of the guys who run a tight ship business wise, my ears don't necessarly agree with. but as you mentioned, i've have this discussion that maybe some of the guys who get stuff out the door, could probably get you your tone if you worked with them on it?

Hey Brad,

Thanks for the input. I am leaning that direction now. It is between Soldano and Friedman. May I ask how much the Mod you are getting costs? Thanks,
Jason

I think Dave also had a big part in designing the Blankenship Variplex, which a friend of mine has and it really sounds fantastic! I agree, I would never send my amp to cameron, and just based off of turnaround time, and the fact that other pro's trust him, Dave Friedman seems like a safe bet. But then again a some of the others mentioned who have a solid history and rep I am sure would be able to take your amp to the next level. Good communication on your end would really help probally to getting the end result you are looking for. Sometimes tone words and ears are subjective. Anything you could say to convey what you are hoping for i am sure will go along way.
