I got my "Hairy Brown Eye" mod back last week. It sounds f@#kin' awesome. Quiet, ton's of gain and the low end is nice and tight.

Go with Dave Friedman.

And I was down there in the late 80's...isnt that something... :D

ok,dudes......................got my Jim Wigle "Purplexi" amp back, which has now been modded with the infamous Dave Friedman "Hairy Brown Eye" mod(basically a "Brown Eye" mod w/higher gain switch).i've only had it for a few days and my initial impression...VERY F**KIN COOL!!! the amp's tone has really improved ALOT now, since the dave's mod work was done to it.first, about the "Brown Eye" mod(we'll call this channel 1,for yucks).the tone absolutely NAILS the VH1 album tone!!! just like dave friedman describes it...it's got a raw plexi,stringy-yet thick "amp-about-to blow-up" tone to it.there's this wicked "grind & snarl" to chords that i love.it's just plain FUN to play for early VH stuff.the tone is open and VERY clear gain, yet has enough punch to the bottom end.it sounds great for BOTH rhythm & lead playing.harmonics are awesome & there's just a sweet 3-d "overtone" to it.for Van Halen tones, this is hands-down KICK-ASS!!! ......ok,now with the flip of a switch(or in this amp's case,a "push/pull" pot is used,so with the pot engaged in the "pulled-out" position),the higher-gain "boost" kicks in(for yucks,we'll call this channel 2).ok,so the "available" gain increases by about 25%-30%,i'm thinking, and it immediately propels you into that 80's high-gain tone aka Dokken,Whitesnake,Ratt,etc... the "tone-stack" changes quite a bit,on the higher-gain setting,so re-tweaking the "e.q." setiings and adjustment of the "density" knob is definately needed.seems like there's an instant spike in mids & low-end girth, once the higher-gain switch is activated.otherwise, the "gain boost" feature gives the amp ALOT of flexibility to cover various tones...all in all,the Brown Eye mod is AWESOME and i highly suggest it,with or without the extra "high-gain switch" option......i know everyone would love to hear "clips",but i have no idea on how to get started with that,so all i can say is that i'll work on getting some clips,on the forum,in the near future! :D

Great review ,you got me yearnin' for one. I have to wait till' the holidays pass though. Hopefuly rareguitar will post some clips.

That is actually a brass plaque or it would be off. 1 of 10 GC had Marshall do in a special run for their Hollywood store for some BS event. Cool amp though.

cool lookin amp,Brad.i like the way friedman did the "layout" of the HAIRY-BROWN gain switch & those PWR DRV and DEPTH knob features.good-looking stickers too!

...looks like we have an assault of the "purple-people-eater" amps going on here! :scared: :D

That Wigle amp has to be the BADDEST on the Planet at the moment!!
TONS of MOJO flowing thru that bad boy!!
And who else has a amp that toured with George Lynch??? hmmmm....Anyone?
Thought not!
Drop me a line Neddy boy when you want to cut her loose. It can come back "home" to me anytime. :D

So I got back my purple Marshall Plexi above, loved the brown tones and the GnR tones. After I day I realized I needed another input with crazy high gain ala Mettalica. Sent it back to Dave for another gain stage. Its on the way back to me now after a quick surgery by Freidman. It will now have 3 Friedman Mods in it.

Brown Eye Mod
Hairy Brown Eye Mod
Angry Hippie/ "As heavy as Dave can make it" mod.

Should be the ultimate Marshall. Will get it back next week and post up over the holiday with a clip or two and a report.
