This is not an incredibly long-winded thesis. Just watch the first one minute of this live performance before they even start playing:

Sorry, it's on Spazbook. FML.

Why did they become famous? There's really only one explanation...

You don't even want to know what the white one had to do with its nose.

Bacofoil should be reserved for wrapping food, not your fucking knob.

Which reminds me…
Hey pet - do ya like chicken?
Well suck this - it’s foul.

Same way Sleep Token did. See Dan’s thread from yesterday.

Sometimes I think i'm casting pearls before swine, but every once in a while people are paying attention

Yes, @nightlight

they got famous the only way any band (or instagram fake guitarist, or youtube fake guitarist) does: by paying bot farms to make twitter and facebook comments/posts about you, to game the algorithm to get more eyes on the "product"

What is that old saying? Gotta spend money to make money.

What is that old saying? Gotta spend money to make money.

In this case, gotta spend hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars (or convince someone else to, on your behalf) to bot farms in the far east

To make tens of thousands of dollars, if you're lucky

While I generally agree with your take on all this shit, there has to be more to it than that.
That math doesn't pencil out, and spending a million to make 10k is not long term sustainable, so something else must be going on under the hood to make this worthwhile.
I just don't understand where the profit is in this?
Who comes out ahead in the end?

im exaggerating to make the point that the way the economics pan out is absolutely insane, even compared to the old music industry

Prefer me some Angine de Belew.
No spots, no bacofoil, no facial dildos, no smug audiences thinking they’ve found something new - hyping it all the way to a Glastonbury headline slot. Just Adrian being Adrian.

The live Rockpalast performance is even better. Listen with good headphones, so you can feel the bass.
14 years ago - you French fucking knobheads.

On the algorithm being gamed: you pay 10 American dollars and you can get 70k hits directly by paying TikTok or Facebook. I know this because they once pitched it to me.

Of late though, there algorithm has been goofing up. Please have a look at these pictures and make up your own mind what happens when hard coding starts to interfere with the algorithm:

50k followers? I can't see anything. It's like when I open Windows and the computer stares back at me.

Here's an example of being offered 70k hits for $10. That's how the entire K-Pop industry functions, you think it's because everyone started to like music in languages they don't understand?

Beyond that, if you tap Indian bot farms (it's a huge thing here for all the Bollywood losers dressing like trash and making trash movies where they act like themselves), the price is really, really low.

I suspect that's the route most Youtube superstars go.

Things are even worse for me on American sites like YT and Instagram. TikTok just takes pity on me lol

I didn’t understand a word of that.

Explain this though.
I was stumbling home from the pub, down this dark alley.
I got out my phone, and pulled up my AI playlist.
I suddenly felt this huge pressure on my back, was bent over, and as my trousers hit my knees there was this searing pain in my bottom. It went on for some time until I lost conciousness.
When I came round, there was just me and my phone there.
Last fucking time I use AI.

That's easy:

...if you see what's popular.

Go back 10+ years, and look at this, every release date., for your answer:

just wait until AI generated characters "perform" AI generated music. The future lows will be worse.
