Why so many Matte and Satin finishes?

I have a few satin / matte finish guitars. I prefer gloss; I prefer painted gloss necks. I prefer matching headstocks. Not into woodgrain, and dining room furniture brown shitbursts.

If the satin / matte guitars I have were available in the same color in gloss, I'd buy the gloss.

Kiesel was charging more for gloss finishes recently; Jeff mentioned in one of his Wednesday "live" shows on YT but I forget the reason, but it was something to do with cost IIRC. Last I checked it was not an upcharge in the Builder at least last week for the models I was considering.

maybe there are satin / matte paints that don't require a top coat, saving a step, time and cost of materials and labor?
You don't need the same level of prep or work after spraying matte/satin as gloss. The most amount of actual labor that goes into making guitars is sanding in prep and after paint before buffing. 2k Urethane gloss paint can already hide a lot, really curious what sort of work is done for matte! They probably finish at 100 grit! :ROFLMAO:

Up next will be guitar companies spraying bed liner so they don't need to do any work at all, and they'll market it as a premier finish at first to build hype.

Ok but trucks painted with bed liner are fucking sick 😂

That'll be +$200 Mr. Consoomer

I hate marketers and accountants so much. I live in a small town. We have a hardware store. There's been two women that have worked there for probably 25 years. Recently the store chain was bought by a larger chain owned by some vulture crapital firm. The first thing they did was fire these two women that have been working there for 25 years. I'm sure they weren't making a lot of money since it's a low end job...probably $50k a year? Just so they could replace them with two people making say $42k a year. Some little putrid reprobate accountant in New York City saw those salaries on a list somewhere and decided he could save a tiny amount of money and move the stock of their dogshit company 0.000000000000000000000000000002 cents by up ending two lives. And of course in a small town, people like this being treated this way doesn't go unnoticed, so the amount of business this store has lost from everyone saying 'fuck this company, I'm going to buy stuff at the new store 5 miles farther that hired them' is probably 10x what the savings in salary is. But of course that will go unnoticed by the shitbags in NYC, they'll just see loss of revenue, decide it has nothing to do with their shittiness, and look for more people to fire and replace with lower salary.

This is our economy:

I know right when someone said 'bedliner' the 7DBK would pop up.

As an owner of one, the finish looks nothing like be lining.

The knockoff models use that crap and it looks awful.

The DBK paint looks like it is wet/melting.

Very cool in person.

Satin doesn't show any scratches like a gloss finish
Bullshit. I can scratch anything. My Spectors are both matte finish and they are both beat to fuck. I wore through the finish where my arm rests on the body and where I set my thumb on the pickup. Both have dings and scratches all over.

Agreed.

Satin degrades much faster than gloss. As far as the surface scratches - the reflection on the surface makes it easier to see them, but satin scratches easier overall, especially down to wood.

Gloss finishes can easily be sanded/polished to look brand new with no worries on some fairly deep scratches, not so with satin.

Don’t feel too bad. A couple of my own jokes from yesterday bombed this bad too. It happens to a lot of guys 🙃
Should have gone with my first instinct about never attending a bukake party if Matt is there.

I dunno, I think there are some really great matte finish designs out there.

I painted cars professionally for 20+ years and I can say for sure it's cheaper and easier. Getting an deep , even shine straight out of the gun (without colorsanding and polishing) is the hardest and most time consuming skill. Bottom line is it's easier and cheaper to do a satin finish.

Gloss finish...it's hard. Anderson uses a robot to get his exquisite finishes

That's my disappointment about the whole thing. I'd rather save a few more bucks to have the real deal, not some guitar with primer only on it

There was somebody on sevenstring that rhino liner'd their LTD F series 7 and it looked pretty neat but I would say it only really works on those sorts of shapes imo. The pics on there are dead but they reposted it on facebook:

Only satin necks for me - I only have one gloss neck guitar left, and it’s a super glassy feeling 2016 PRS Custom 24.

I bet it sounds like a truck bed too.
