What are the worst guitar speakers you've ever played through, and why ? Ones that sound like ass no matter what. Let's exempt standards and obvious choices like the V30 and G12T-75 because both have the ability to sound great or hideous, depending on the amp. Or budget combo units like the Celestion Rocket 50 and similar cheapies.

Celestion G12M-70 - dull, dark, undefined yet harsh. Similar to a G12T-75 with special needs.

Celestion Sidewinder - not a lot of low end for a 150w speaker. Spikey and fatiguing with ultra stiff high end, likely due to the aluminum voice coil. I had 4 of these in my first 4x12 ages ago. Tried them again many years later and instantly remembered why I sold them.

Hartke guitar drivers - unknown model name. The ones with 100 % Aluminum cones !?! Super fast attack and extreme articulation. Sounds like a great concept IF there is a degree of body and warmth to support the upper frequencies, of which these had none. All hifi zing, sounded like setting fire to a piece of tin foil.

Emminence P50 - ok with VHT amps. The fuzzy voicing complements and gives juice and forgiveness to the dry VHT gain structure but with other amps sounds like a Greenback with its balls cut off.

Sheffield speakers in my 6505 cab... it just sounded bad...

I didn't like eminence legends with my Herbert (too much lows), but with an ENGL or JSX/6505/5150 they sounded pretty good.

Here is another vote for the G12M-70 I had a pair in a 212 cab, and they were awful!!!

Every eminence I've tried was awful. Grainy and harsh.

Peavey Blue Marvel.

I LOVED that lil 8" speaker in in Blazer/Rage 150! Of course, it was the only one I knew, as well

Whatever they put in Soldano cabs. Dark, dull, and lifeless speakers.

G12m70s and peavey scorpions, both completely terrible.

Yeah, when the 5150 cabs came out there were two different Sheffield series units (1200 and 1290 I think) and I remember trying both. Both not great but one was much worse than the other.

I often wonder how many guys sold there amps because they were plugged into a Marshall cab with the G12M-70's? The only speaker ive ever played that could ruin the sound of any amp you plug into them!
Worst Celestion ive ever heard for sure.

Splawn Small Block
Eminence/Fryette P50
Eminence Red, White, and Blues
Eminence Black Powder
WGS Invader
Celestion G12K-100
Celestion Classic Lead 80

that's what i found them to be, though, strangely enough, they sounded good with a shitty marshall mg head i used to use to practice with my old band with.....i think the dullness of the speakers tamed the harshness of that amp.

also, played a krank cab with 4x10's in it, i think they were texas heats...just about the same as the g12m70s....shite! fuckin HATED that thing and those speakers...wayyy too dark.

I agree with everything on the G12m-70. That is by far the worst speaker I have ever played through.

the M-70s...i used them for YEARS, and basically got used to them. they made a Laney AOR 100 and a 5150 sound like crap, as well as the Recto. horrible! they werent too bad when you were pushing the hell out of them, but even then they sucked!

G12m70 are terrible.

Not a fan of the stock speakers from the fender hot rod series or the peavey classic series either.
