Wow a Rockstah mod 5 head is not cheap...

Marks mods were really good but also Mark was a killer player (which is one reason his demos sounded so good). 2K is a fair price.

If you already had that amp how much would just the mod itself cost?
I have a Metro 12xxx with Mod5, bought it used for $1100.

Mark(RIP)charged $550 for the Mod.Mark was a great player he also put alot of time into the Mod 5 to achieve that sound

The problem isn't the price. Well, it is stupid. But the real problem is no one has ever made those mods sound as good as Mark did. So spend what you wish. But if you don't have the hands, you're wasting your time and money.

About $30 to $40 in parts, and a half hour to do the work.

Ya know, I could care less what someone asks for their gear, but at that price combined with the whole "RIP Mark..history..RIP Mark.... emails from Mark..cant get anymore... RIP Mark"..etc. it just screams cash grab!! Not just the Craigslist ad but when he had it on Ebay it was also the same shit, although I think it was over 10k on Ebay. That to me says "Marks gone and i'm gonna cash in"! Fuck that seller. Piece of shit.!!!

Do you mean in terms of amp mods?
If you are, then anyone who knows electronics can do the mods. It's just parts and installation. It ain't neural surgery. :)
The real question is, do they know what those parts are?

I think your seeing them under $2k is because guys need the money or to purchase something else.I have the last amp(Rockitt Retro 68 Plexi 50 watt-Rocktsah Mod 5) that Mark(RIP)modded before he passed away and I was offered $5k from a japanese amp collector which I turned down. Its the(in my opinion)best amp I ever owned soundwise for early Van halen thats for sure.....
;)
I sold my Mark Modded Mod5 Peacemaker here in the classifieds after Marks unfortunate passing, for $1100.00 and it had nothing to do with needing money. I simply passed the amp on to someone else for exactly what I paid for it and thats what the amp was worth. To me, to try to profit on someones death is an aweful thing to do and i'm a strong believer in KARMA.

Gtrwun,That's why I still own mine plus for early Van halen it's (in my opinion)the best.I will probably never sell mine due to that it was the last amp that Mark modded before he passed. What I ment is some will sell a item because they need money or to purchase something else.

Wow, that was a great grab at $1,100! Did George build it, or was it a kit?

No not at all. I meant that Mark was amazing at actually "playing like" EVH.

A little more time if you actually reduce the filtering (which he didn't bother with many times) as his original did, but otherwise 100% accurate…

The silly thing is that the whole thing has been explained in detail, with pictures, schems, etc. in multiple places. Why anyone would pay $9500 to get one Mark did is beyond me -any reasonably skilled tech could do the same thing for a tiny fraction of that. I know people will say that "he tweaked each one specifically to get the tone based on the amp modded" and such, but having looked at the insides of plenty in pictures, I find that not to be the case… they all look just like the standard description, most times without the filtering changes.

What really got people coveting these amps was the very nice VH vibe Mark had to his playing and the fact that the clips were recorded at very low volume on the PPIMV with maxed gain and regular master and a ton of plate reverb sim. That is why no one else's clips of the amp sound as good and why the amps wouldn't sound the same at a gig volume… PPIMV adds perceived gain and compression at low, low volumes...

What does reducing the filtering do? Or sound like?

Gives the amp that more compressed sag to the feel, but in my experience it's pretty subtle compared to preamp changes. What Mark must have realized was that there was no point in making the filtering changes once he changed the preamp and was cranking the gain, master and cutting the volume massively with the PPIMV to get that tone in a recording…

Steve

Mark was a great player and could nail the VH tone and feel. I remember he made clips of an amp that just nailed it, then he sold the amp to some guy who made his own clips and it was NOWHERE close to a VH tone. It was Mark getting those tones, the amp won't do it alone.

Well said my friend. :2thumbsup:

Agreed with everything said:

30-40$ in parts and knowing which those are.. he supposedly tweaked those values per amp but overall the general concept was the same and you can get close enough with modding the preamp and adding the PPIMV.

Steve hit it on the head, RECORDED that spec def delivers the goods. Dial OUT the PPIMV and it might sound a little more ordinary and with less of that SAG feeling

His hands were a huge part in getting that tone.

Anyone trying to make cash off the name is a douche. 10 k is ridiculous.

I think I paid Andy 1600 for his...a very clean 2204 is 1K? Plus 550 for the mod and shipping if Mark were still here...1600 is fair. Nice amp..but not too much different(to me) than an 800 and a pedal..

I might have Andy's? Well it's an 800. Sounds great. Brighter than you would think in person. But it does sound like an early VH tone.
