It amazes me that amp builders cannot re-create this amp today.
George and David Bray?

Yeah, I can't believe it.
Probably one of the most brutal amps ever built and no one wants to take-on a reissue with master volume or clone.

I'd love to see David Bray build one, that would be cool.
I wonder if it could be just two KT88s and 'only' 100W and still have the mojo? That could be a fun build.

I thought I read somewhere that these amps were slightly under-designed in some way (maybe the OT?) and if you boosted the input and cranked the amp then a meltdown of some sort would ensue. A meltdown of the actual amp that is...everything else within a mile radius would certainly be melted as well. Does that sound right Michael?

Two KT88's wouldn't have the same headroom sound. It would still sound cool tho. :)

Yes, there was a problem with the OT and “prv” voltage (peak reverse voltage) but it is a easy fix.
Their was a guy named Otto that was upgrading the OT's for Marshall back in the day. Otto would wind a lot of mylar insulation between the primary and secondary preventing it from arcing out.
Making a boost pedal usable, basically making the amp usable period at very loud volumes.
I remember reading that Blackmore would get about 24 hours on the Major before it had to be rebuilt, so he probably didn't have one of Otto's rebuilt OT in his. :)

That´s how a proper old-school rockstar does it, writing your amps off as acceptable collateral damage every week or so

Gotta figure to get this great low volume tone, you wouldn't need 200 watts to the tubes, since most of what we're hearing is preamp and phase inverter tube tone. So, simple Major (super bass) signal path, changed values in the tone stack, one wire mod, PPIMV and two EL34's would do it, I bet!?

I'm sure people have tried it but I wonder if one of those '70s Bassman 135 amps could sound good if converted. The have UL OTs and same number of tubes but 6L6GC instead of KT88 and should be pretty cheap.

It's hard to believe this was recorded at TV listening volume.
I can honestly say after experimenting with different vintage Marshall amp circuits the 200w Major design works best with a PPIMV.
The Major's Ultralinear design allows it to breath really nice with a PPIMV installed and nothing in the sound really changes, it still keeps the integrity of the original cranked up tone.

Here's a low volume clip with all the screaming gain and controlled feedback as it would sound like at full volume.
You can hear my strings acoustic noise when I'm whacking hard on them.
I should mention, the front end of the amp is cascaded with the one wire mod for a little gain boost. :)

Sounds really good man  .

You're very kind, thanks man.

Yeah, no surprise here....as expected, sounds badass! Congrats, you have it mastered and can simply sit back and make music (and enjoy having zero amp and speaker/cab gas)!

Thank you my friend.

I don't think GAS ever really leaves us, it's always creeping around. :)

This is very, very true. I feel that you should exercise that need to acquire new gear and to help you, I will buy this no longer original, heck, since we are negotiating, I should say "butchered" old Marshall from you.

What is you email address for Paypal?

Here's a little Van Halen cover I did with my friend from Australia.
This is my Major with a MXR Phase 90 in front of it and Ibanez Jem. (SH-4 bridge)

https://soundcloud.com/studio8-1/atomic ... l-mixdown2

How does the Phase 90 compare to the Wylde Phase?

I should have mentioned my MXR Phase 90 is modded in a way that gives it that unity gain. Most Phase 90's over power the guitar signal too much and won't give you that sound Eddie had on the first album. I think all but one guitar solo on VH1 had the MXR Phase 90 being used. Because it's kinda subtle sounding most never noticed it being use and that's the key to getting this sound IMHO. You need to have that balanced unity sound with the guitar signal and effect. I've never tried the Wylde Phase so I'm not sure if it can accomplish this creamy sounding unity.

I thought you had modded Wylde Phase? I must be thinking of someone else. Thanks all the same!
