Beautiful!

Your stuff, David Bray's, and the Mojave stuff are definitely the best early VH tones I've heard. Rock on!

thank you for not using a floyd

but the dimarzio....i'm gonna have to pass. never will i put another dimarzio in a guitar unless it's the hs-2 i already own in a strat middle position for the middle/bridge ej tone.

but the clip is killer!
I've come to the conclusion that its silly to rule out any pickup brand or model. Seeing as every guitar is different and your overall tone is created by the interaction of all of its components, what doesn't work in one (or many) situations doesn't mean it won't work well in another.
Two examples that come to mind for me are the Dimarzio Super Distortion and Tone Zone. A friend recently dropped a Dimarzio SD in his PRS SC245 and I teased him unmercifully...until I fired it up. I have never cared for that pickup but it was perfect in this guitar...I was left scratching my head and apologizing for the hard time I gave him. A few years back I had the same experience with the Tone Zone. I bought an old Charvel mutt that had one in it which I planned to replace. When the guitar arrived, I was surprised at how good it sounded...I had never cared for that pickup before. I still decided that I'd go with my old standby Duncan Custom...it came back out the same day and the TZ went back in and its still there.

BTW, great sounding amp! Darren was right on with his asessment (VHII is my favorite Ed tone as well).
I have several guitars with Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups. That pickup is great for the early VH tones...

Steve

i've been through the super distortion (had it in two guitars before i pulled it and gave it away to a friend) tone zone, and currently have the hs-2 and virtual vintage. played through bunches of them.

it's strictly a matter of personal preference, just like the floyd, and every dimarzio has a bright peak that may sound great to a microphone but nasty to my ear. the only reason i can stand the hs-2 is because i only use it with another pickup, a duncan.
not every duncan is great but i prefer them overall. and boutiques.

i had a parker fly with dimarzios..hated it/the worst tone! at this point i'm so over them that even if they made the best pickup on earth now i couldn't care less. done.
Hey whatever works for ya! I have had a different experience...

Come on now Pat. Would you have KNOWN it wasn't a Floyd if he didn't post the picture of it? A

I dislike DiMarzio pickups too normally, but Mark using one makes me question my bias.

Sounds fantastic Mark! Is this a new Super Distortion or some difficult to find, vintage one from the 70's?

Thanks

Oh fine... and I guess the fact that I use them is irrelevant... I see how things are...

Stock magnet? I remember reading about an a8. Even ordered one once to put in a dsd but never got around to it.

I just found out after I posted this that you use them too. Just that little tidbit caused me to sever my business ties with Seymour Duncan and order $5k in DiMarzios, all of them Super Distortions!

i put an a5 in there for a minute and went right back to the ceramic. never tried a a8 in it.

Mark have you tried an A2? I thought that's what Eddie used. . .at least that's what's in his Fender Frankenstein humbucker.

i tried an a2 in a seymour 59 and also had a Jim Wagner darkburst that i had an a2 in as well. my opinion was that an a2 was too soft sounding for me in the upper fregs.

There are definitely pics of Ed using a Super Distortion back in the day. I've also seen an X2N in his B&Y Charvel...not at all what you would associate with his tone IMO but the pics don't lie.

Sounds great.

Just curious, what amp in your opinion comes out the best with your mods? The early 70's like in this thread (72) or later JMP's or JCM800's?

i like the 70's amps which would lead me to to say the transformers are better BUT could people tell the difference in a blind test i'm not sure.
i have some very happy people that have as late as the early 2000's reissues.

I dig Dimarzio's to. I would take a Tone Zone or a Super Distortion over any Seymour Duncan double coil.
There's something really nice in the mids, lots of thick overtones.
