I have owned like every high gain head worth having and the evh 5150iii was one of the worst amps I have ever herd/owned . Lasted three days red chan had just to much gain and blue chan did not have enough gain, boosting the amp would make it sound thin with no thump. The amp really needed a resonance . Must be why Ed has BE100 guts in his EVH head cabs lol. This was confirmed by a GOOD source

Someone should do this guy a solid and introduce him to a little thing called "grammar." :)

I don't believe this for one second. 1998 and 2004 Eds live sound was the Peavey 5150 II And Wolfgang guitars. Anybody with that combo will tell you this is so. Myself included. 1998 he had all bare chassis amps in his pit. I saw them. I assumed it was for convenience. Maybe he was already anti Peavey? 2004 he has the EVH logos on his cabs. Same tone. No idea what head he really used. I assumed the Peaveys. 2007, not his best tone. Cocked wah thing. I didn't notice it live. In person he sounded great. And it's the 5150 III. Here's where it gets interesting. Ever since the early '90s I've recognized his tone as a 5150 at its core. And said yep, sounds like my amp. This is all live in person. 2012 sound heck I go whoa, that's not a 5150. It's darker and less gainy. Then I got a USA Wolfgang Stealth and through the rhythym channel of my 5150 there was the same sound. I had never used the rhythym channel really before that. Watch any Mean Street clip post 1998. The intro he starts with the rhythym channel then switches to the lead for the tapping parts. It's clearly a 5150 lead channel. II or III you can hear the difference between the channels. 2015 he has too much gain. Somehow it works for him. I have a 5150 III 2x12 combo. I can't use that much gain on the red channel. It's ludicrous! It's the 100S Stealth heads he's using. Again, obvious to me in person.

What's the point of all this? Showing I know his live tones and can spot a 5150 a mile away. He's using 5150 amps live and has since 1991. Balance there were rumors he hid his Marshall backstage. Didn't sound like it to me.

Now to play Devil's advocate, which I love to do. Let's assume Ed played a BE-100 and liked it. He'd still be pissed at Mr. Friedman for ripping him off. There's precedent. He gets mad. Wether it's the case or not is debatable. So maybe he hides one in the studio to tinker with and someone found out. Could be. But on the road? No way.
