I wouldn't kick a dead hog in the ass for the difference between all 5. They all sounded good. I'll go with whoever said whichever one is cheapest. I picked 5 but seriously could tell very little difference between all of them. Thanks for doing this, I really enjoy these blind polls like this.
 
i've listened extensively now to these trying to figure it out... here are my guesses

1. Peters (I always thought the Peter's stuff and the Splawn stuff sounded kind of similar...this sounded similar to what I thought was the nitro)
2. Mark IV (this was a shot in the dark)
3. Nitro (something in the mids just tells me this is a Splawn...)
4. Mako (basically a shot in the dark also)
5. Krank (this just seemed like very typical Krank to me, I could be way off.)

I assume this is WAY off, but this is what me ears told me :lol: :LOL:

3 sounded boldest. 4 sounded a little choked to me.
 
Im more amazed that those 5 very different manufacturers could sound so similar...
 
I'm excited to hear the results. I voted #3 but they all sounded fairly similar (as has been stated).

Last time I voted in one of these, I voted for splawn (which I have never owned) so if it happens again, I may need to look to the market :thumbsup:
 
I think this small shootout, along with the over the top- hard ass work that James did prove a few very important things we should all think about........When your dealing in high gain amps/tone....the cabinet/speakers are a huge factor in the resulting sound....Sure, the guitar, and the player makes a big difference, but what we hear once the gain gets past a certain point is the speaker/cab. If you played all these amps thru different cabs there would be a huge difference I feel.

Ah. Reamping. Not that it isn't a valid tool, but it doesn't allow you to "play the amp". We react differently when playing different amps, and that's part of how we either get better (or worse) sounds from them, based on what we do when we play them.

And, a boost? No wonder I haven't the slightest idea which was the Gryphon. :)
 
I dunno, they all sounded pretty close to me as well, I pick #2, sounds the tightest to me.
 
DAMN!!! Usually I dig your posts man, but this one is just buggin' the shit outta me. I usually can NAIL my tone down, pick it apart, hear the overtones, and so forth - but this was a way tough call. Ya, they all sounded similar, and if it weren't for the differences in circuit noise, I'd think they were all the same.

The backtracks made my choices completely different than without the backtracks :cry:

I'm not going to bother hazarding a guess. On its own, I like #1, with the backtrack, I like #3 and #4. Something tells me the Makoplex is #1, but I'm going out on a limb here BIG time... I think Krank is #4.

1 & 2 sound EL34-ish to me, which I don't like for modern hard rock rhythms, so I'm guessing the Splawn is one of those two.
4 has some low mid huevos that you can dial in easily with the Krank's parametric SWEEP so I'm guessing it's the Rev+.
3 or 5 is the Mark.
No experience with the Peters or Makoplex, so I'm in the dark there.
Not enough full chords nor any leads, so it's really hard to pick them out.

I am surprised that these 5 amps could sound that close to the same.
 
I'd be in for just a SM57, no reamp, direct-in approach to these 5 amps to be honest with ya...

But hey, you put some solid work into these as is, not expecting ya to re-test them all just because we're having a hard time deciphering the differences. But I think a single mic, med/med-high volume test, naked signal in-out would make this more interesting as we'd be hearing the amps - and only the amps - through a controlled medium (same cab, same mic placement, etc.)

I liked the 1st the best. I'm going to go out on a limb and say

1=Mako
2=Mesa
3=Krank
4=Splawn
5=Peters
