I think 2 is definitely the Nitro, 4 is a 5150, 5 is a QR and 7 is a Friedman modded Super Lead.

Yeah the Rectifier isn't the greatest and I always tell people I record that its probably the easiest amp to screw up on tone and hardest to get right. But, I will say this, the rectifier blends with amps AMAZINGLY. I mean blend it with a marshall and it just adds some nice meat and saturation.

You mentioned King For A Day as one of your favourite tones, that album changed my life and made me realize that was the tone that I had in my head for so long. Do you have any hints on how to get close to it?

And back to the original topic, I listened to the clips again through my very trusty ATH M50 headphones, the best of them all, to me, is the Mako Ch 3, followed closely by Splawn Nitro and 5150. From the more saturated ones, the Herbert shines IMO.

I actually talked with the new guitar player of Faith no more and he said on that album he was told that they used a JMP1. I don't know other then that. He currently uses Dual Rectifier's live (older ones) and his tone is crushing too. Just look on youtube.

Yeah that opening tone on "Cuckoo for Caca" is just flat out amazing. It also doesn't hurt having Andy Wallace produce and mix your album.

The Mak4 I actually really loved the harmonics of. Has a really silky smooth top end but still bites. My complaint with it was its a little too stringy for me. Sounds like Im playing a tele thru it. It also is a little noisy too. But man I do love the harmonics of it.

The herb I thought was great too but for the price compared to some of the others I just couldn't justify. To me, it seems on the diezel stuff your paying for a lot of the live options (midi, loops etc..). The diezel stuff tho has great cleans and I can't really say the same about any of the amps on my list but for maybe the SLO.

BTW another 2 cents. Seems the 5150 is one of the best buys out there. I mean you can get one used for $600 and they record so well. There's a reason why so many bands use them. Cleans is another story.

I actually feel kinda lucky as the band I got signed with used 5150s and I really never tried anything else. Now after trying all these other amps and thinking I had a cheap amp, I realize the 5150 is pretty amazing at what it does. Also doesn't hurt having Andy Wallace mix your first album hehe

Wow... great post...

The Splawn Nitro el34's was definitely the best... thanks for posting this!!!

P.S. what amp sim did you use for the Axe-fx?

Amp sim on the axe was either the 5150 or dual rec. It was a friends and I remember liking those two as starting grounds as far as heavy tonez goes.

I will say the axe is amazing at cleans!!!

So I just went through ALL of these again with the ear goggles... One thing I noticed last night with the Axe was that there's a constant and consistent 'buzz' (almost in the pitch of A 440Hz) that goes from start to finish regardless of the samples tonal changes for the riff. Anyone else here picking up on this? It's like dead centre - bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - throughout the entire piece. No other samples have it

Interesting.

Mrevol - thank you, this was AWESOME!! Now I gotsta say, I'm still 100% jazzed on the 7th sample - the Super Lead, but I spend some time with the above mentioned ear goggles on the other samples and dude, the Mak 4 Chan3 RIPS!!!!!! I had asked earlier if it was possible to get the Makoplex and Dorado channels sampled - this sounds to me like the Makoplex and Dorado channels, no?? I "assumed" 3 and 4 on the Mak 4 were crunch and clean, and that channels 1 and 2 were Dorado and Mako. Please clarify.

Cuz I've got a Mak 4 coming with a Fryette 2/90/2 and man, this Chan3 sample blows ALL the others (including my beloved No.7) out of the water!!

THANKS!!

After listening a few more times, I think 3 is the Krank and 9 is the SLO.

that herbert clip really has a lot of articulation and definition even with that crazy amount of saturation.

that is the amp that i think would stack and blend well with other amps.

in fact, I got one of em too.

got some work to do eh?!

DDDEEEEWWWWDDDD!!!!!!!!

Verntura--the Mak4 as far as I know is the Dorado heavy (Chan4) and Makoplex heavy (chan3). Channel 2 was a lighter breakup channel and Channel 1 was a clean. So you are set!!!!

By itself I like 5 the best, but #2 would probably sit best in a mix.
This !
5 sounds like a slightly darker version of 2... I like darker tones but it probably would get a little lost in the mix relative to 2

This is as far as I have read. So if the answers have been posted, I have not seen them.
yes, by itself I like 5 best. 3 and 9 also. They do all sound in the same very small ballpark.

Very cool man---

Just remember that I used a 2x12 mesa v30's as if you use something else Im sure the tone will be a little different.

Here's also a direct Axe Fx clip I did while borrowing a friends. Understand that I just layed this down within 30 mins to get an idea of the Axe fx. All cleans and guitars were thru it. Wish I would have put bass as it would have helped. Drums are EZ drummer and please don't let my rushin/draggin guitar playing bug.

Yep. I'm either going with a Mills 4x12 stereo wired, or 2 Mills 2x12's. Not sure yet. But they'll be V30 loaded 99% certain...

Killer, killer post man, thanks for taking the time - this is quality!! :2thumbsup:

Mondo Thanks, and if it's not yet been said WELCOME ABOARD RT!!! :rawk:

it sounds great for heavy guitars!
