Another string thread.... Stringjoys?

I've been playing D'Addario EXL110's for 20 years. I've noticed inconsistency, some bent up ends, black rings and other funky things in the last few years. Is it just me?

My brother's been using Stringjoys and raves about them. $11.99 a pack.

Anybody else see D'Addarios being crappier and switched after many years? I cant do Ernie Ball. I'll ruin a set in 3 hours. Plus I don't like the feel, they're prone to fret buzz with lower action I set my guitars at, and they throw my intonation out of whack. Of course I can do a set up to fix all that, but I still find them to be garbage.

$12 a pack seems steep, but it is probably the cost of business these days.

Been using D'Addario EXL110's almost exclusively since the late 90s. Can't say I ever had any QC issues besides maybe a few broken high E strings on install which might have been me or my guitar's fault.

For the past few years though, I have been using Stringjoy's on my favorite guitars. I like the Balanced 10 set. I can't say they sound better or last longer than the D'Addarios but I love how the wound strings feel. There's a smoothness and a quickness to them with the way my fingers are made up. They are pricey; so I only use them on a few of my most played guitars.

With how expensive things are getting nowadays, I'll stick with D'Addario. They work fine and I haven't noticed any inconsistency?

I’ve played a lot of guitar strings including DA’s when I was gigging, and I didn’t notice too much difference from the expensive to the cheaper sets.

Between the smoke in bars, and my very sweaty hands, I had to change strings quite often .

Now that I’m a bedroom player, I just buy Musician’s Gear strings from Musician’s Friend.

I just ordered a 5 pack of 9’s, and a 5 pack of 10’s, and each set cost me &1.99 each cause the 5 packs were on sale for $9.99 .

Yeah, I buy the D'Addarios in bulk. MF has 12 packs at $49.99 during sales, or i just get 5 packs from Amazon who is frequently cheaper. I change strings weekly to bi-weekly.

I use whatever is on sale at MF.
Was $39 for 12 sets now a few members posted its up to $49

Comes out to about what i paid in the 80s for a set

There are only 3 string manufacturers in the USA. Everyone else buys their supplies from one of the big three, so there's a good chance Stringjoy buys their wire from D'Adarrio.

Maybe so. But i play with 10 52s. I used to break 9s all the time

9's break too easily. I like 10's myself. I would try NYXL's based on your recommendation, but custom sets are $15.

So 15 may seem expensive, but if they last that much longer, may be cheaper.

I generally replace the high E every show or two, which would be about 5 total playing hours max. I replace the B every three or four shows. I replace the entire set after five or six shows as the frets grind the D string down flat at the point of contact. Other than flatwounds I have never found a round wound that didn't behave in the same way I.e to me they are more or less all the same.

Stringjoy is fine. I mainly use them if I need a custom gauge set that isn't available off the shelf.

Never used them. For strings I usually buy Newtone Strings as they are UK made and last a good amount of time.

I tried Stringjoys on my RG550 and didn't get it.

The tone was good, but not better than other faves, but the FEEL was awful, way too stiff. I took them off after maybe 1 hr of playing time and couldn't' wait to swap to NYXLs.

With very few exceptions for a few odd guitars I have, I default to NYXLs for everything now. They have no faults other than being moderately expensive, although they aren't too bad these days if you buy in bulk.
