Another string thread.... Stringjoys?

I worked for a guitar builder where we put string joys on tons of our custom guitars. I've been through hundreds of sets. They feel like any other string. The benefit with them is the custom set, so if you play a weird scale length and tuning you can get the exact tension you need.

Personally I'd rather use a string company/gauge that is inexpensive and you can find at any guitar store. Break a string before a gig? Hope you can next day some string joys because I can pick up a pack of D'Addario or Ernie Ball after a 10m drive.

If your into pure nickel wound strings you are not beating StringJoys. Its a higher quality string that justifies the price. Their life expectancy is more than 2-3 times longer than budget friendly strings. These strings are not going stiff in a few weeks. So at the end of the day they're cheaper to play.

My playing schedule is about an hour every night. A set of StringJoys last me two to three months before losing their slinkiness. At three months they still feel better than a new pair of budget strings. Given I wipe and wax the strings after every playing session.

CrankyRay, Am I full of shit here? You're the guy that turned me on to these probably around 10 years ago.

i buy a custom set of stringjoys in bulk and like that i can fine tune gauges and tensions. the feel and sound of them are better than the elixer nanos i used for a decade. and they last last almost as long too.
D’addarios XLs are great as well and i use those fairly interchangeably.

Fortunately for the OP our safety glasses wearing forum friend Kyle Bull™️ has chosen to endorse Stringjoy so you know they are probably the best string on earth right now. The ONLY string on earth that will send your playing into the stratosphere.

I just ordered 5 sets of a custom gauge and their pick sampler pack.
The original Robin Trower gauges way back when he tuned standard-

Napalm, you ever try NYXLs? I love the sound and you almost never need to change strings
I could not agree with this more. A friend of mine who plays every week in a local band turned me onto the NYXL some time ago, and now they are the only strings I will buy. I have never found another string that holds tune better - and I have several non-locking trem guitars in the stable. And they feel slippery and new under your fingers long after other strings start to get that 'dragging' feeling.

D'addario does offer the NYXL in a 'Balanced Tension' option where they bump the a couple of the strings in a 'standard' 009 or 010 set up a gauge or two and other strings down a gauge or two to bring each individual string closer to the same tension when tuned to pitch. I thought it sounded 'gimmicky' until I tried a set. They are killer.

No lies detected^

I'm still rocking the Stringjoys here! Though 10 years later I'm starting to get thinner sets (especially on the top 2 or 3 strings) to help with my aging hands

Stringjoy is fine. I mainly use them if I need a custom gauge set that isn't available off the shelf.
This. I can get my preferred gauge sets for everything from E std to C# std off the shelf, and tend to use either GHS Burnished Nickel or DR Pure Blues. Once I get down to C std to A std I need Custom sets, and order those through String Joy.
