Yeah I forgot about Erock, he had both and he has a good way of putting things plus the dude can play his ass off.

Good point from Rage, feel is everything to me no matter the tone.

I have played both, owned a Herbert, and the two could not be further apart tonally, IMO.

Which do you prefer and why?

I couldn't resist chiming in here with a shameless self-promotion. I will happily ship a Colossus H-100 demo amp to anyone (in the USA to keep things simple) who owns or has access to both amps. I'd love to get an opinion as to how my beast stacks up. Personally, I think it will be almost of a blend between the two, a happy medium if you will. The Colossus definitely does metal, but it can also do 80s rock. Plus, 12 MIDI/foot/front panel switchable functions, on-the-fly channel mode options, and the kitchen sink for good measure. :)

FWIW, at the recent HRI hang in Chicago we did an A/B/Y with a Herbert and Colossus. It was an epic combination -- the Herbert is much more scooped metal sounding and the Colossus is almost tighter, aggressive, and more full with mids. The bottom end of both is huge, and the combo moved an epic amount of air.

Anyone up for it?

I meet none of the of the criteria, I have neither a CCV or Herbert and live in Canada but would LOVE for you to send me the Colossus :D

Man. I wished I hooked up with Jason to check out that Colossus when he had it. His clip sounded incredible. Looks like a killer amp. I'll have another CCV to pair with my Herbert soon. ;) I'm just a hobbiest/hack.....but my wallet is big.

From looking at your chassis shots and Jason and Andy's thoughts on the amp that seems like a good price.

What is the breakdown of materials? custom Iron? Chassis material?

Big wallet = speaking my language.

The demo amp is heading to SC this week, then to Dallas next week for the guitar show. It will be sitting comfortably at the Strictly 7 Guitars booth for demos.

Cool. I've been thinking about going to the show, but not sure if I can make it. Busy time at work. Strictly 7 has been on my radar for a few months now - since I started getting into 7 strings.

Custom iron throughout. These latest builds are O/Netics output transformers coming out of Washington -- I believe Fortin is using O/Netics as well, but we're likely using different designs. I've teamed up with a local transformer company for a custom choke and power transformer. Due to timing however, the PTs in the current builds were custom built by Heyboer out of Michigan.

A local company that happens to build custom drag cars fabricates all my chassis. They are all water jet cut aluminum with seamless TIG welded corners. Everything is formed on a CNC press break for consistency. The parts are all anodized just south of me in Indianapolis and laser engraved down the street from my shop by a retired tool and die maker. Other local companies handle the few powder coated and silk screened parts that I do -- most is anodized and laser'd.

The cabinetry is all made in my own shop, not outsourced. Everything is customizable from the face plate color, knobs, tolex, grill cloth, speakers, etc. I will also write custom firmware to handle special features and/or insertion into tightly integrated rigs.

Sorry to get off topic!

I have a Herbert currently and a CCV on the way, as well as the ability to record some decent clips. If you want to send me the amp when my CCV ships I'll do some shootouts along with some blending.

Impressive

You have done a great job with your pricing point considering the parts and fabrication, lesser amps are going for more money.

Yeah Mike has started a total irom war from his work it seems, the result is better amps for all

Congrats on your business model and good luck!

seems like a very good price for something this custom, no kit with labels here.

Absolutely no kits of any kind here. The only prefab chassis I ever purchased was for the first amp I ever built. Everything since has been 3D modeled and either water jet cut or CNC milled professionally. I personally handle the fit and finish of the parts before they head to anodizing as well.

FWIW, once I have a dealer network the price will be retail, as published on my site. In the meantime, everyone gets direct pricing, however I don't advertise that. Ooops... :)

In my other life I design and build commercial Braille embossing equipment, among other things, as the sole engineer. All mechanical design, electrical design, firmware/software, etc, is done by yours truly. I apply those same skills to amp and switching system design...

Sorry for the massive derail!

Thanks, I really appreciate the kind words!!

It's easier to keep pricing down for the time being when dealers aren't taking a large chunk off the top. The plan is to move to dealers when the time is right and my business/name is more established. Projects like that with Andy Wood are only helping that along. More and more orders are coming in, and things are shaping up nicely for a comfortable organic growth pattern. Diversification with switching systems, heads, cabinets, and rack mount amps are a big help too. Though, shoot me if I ever decide it's a good idea to start building guitars. :)

I can see a who has the biggest iron war in their bedroom/basement/collector rooms heating up.

I do like to admire the big iron even if I'm just a home player and would never hear their full potential.

Let me know if that amp makes its way to Cali. I'd love to check it out next to some of Mark's stuff.

Not just the size, materials that have never been used before and the end results can be had at low levels just for us basement stars  It is not just overhead but feel, reaction, and articulation.
