Who uses a Herbert heavy/brutal tones and what version is your favorite?

I've only owned V2 and its incredible for recorded metal tones. One of the most brutal amps for that cause no doubt. However, IME the amp doesn't translate well in live situations. It seems to get buried in the mix no matter what cab and speakers you run through it. I feel like the amp is too thicc for its own good.

180 W of thickness that doesn’t cut through a mix. And it’s almost $5000. What a bargain.

I've owned the VI, which many consider to be the best. It is capable of very HEAVY tones and sounds amazing. That said, it is is also a very polished and produced sounding head. It's also fairly smooth in terms of voicing. Many consider "brutal" to mean both high gain as well as rough and gritty (such as a boosted Recto or 5150)....I don't feel that Herbert fits that bucket categorically. Also, I feel it sounds best with mid-cut engaged which sounds insanely good when your sitting in front of a 4x12 cab...But ca be difficult to manage in the context of a band mix. In terms of recording, A Herbert track that is colored with with a more Marshally sounding head with a healthy amount of upper mid content at moderate gain sounds really good.

In Germany you get a used Diezel for about 1200-2200€. So you pay the extra $ for Diezel in the US, we pay extra for the Mesas...Isn't that funny?

Absolutely killer studio amps for metal. I like version 1 the most, version 2 if you’re a gigging musician and the only guitarist in the band live because they fixed the lack of master volume headroom in the clean channel to match the headroom of the gain channel at gigging volumes. I don’t like the voicing in version 3 as version 3 just sounds like a higher gain VH4.

If you have a second guitarist that’s voiced anything like a Marshall it will absolutely get buried in the 1200Hz upper mids. I’ve heard it live myself and it was as if the Herbert didn’t even have a mic on the cabs.

It sucks but that’s the reality of the situation. I like the VH 4 and it’s $4500 give or take.

V2 for me. It's easy to get carried away with the mid-cut, a little goes a long way. An EQ in the loop can help it cut, but it doesn't need it IMO. A Mark can get buried in a mix, too, if you cut too much mid. For brutality, for me, there's nothing better, and that's not all it does.

Herbert has the best clean channel of any high gain head I have ever played.

No one is buying this amp for the clean channel I'll tell and ya know the Mesa IIC+/++ does too but same thing. It also has one of the finest clean channel but no one cares unless your TGP transplant.

+1
Sounds great but didn’t have the high end aggression and bite you get with a recto or Marshall

Sold my Herb and have been happy with my 2ch recto

Used my V1 for a long time with a second guitarist who was using a Mesa and never had a problem getting lost in the mix. Just my experience.
I always liked the clean channel as well...although I had Hans Kruse mld the clean to open it up a bit.
Very versatile amp, again IMO. I have plenty of Marshall's, and I agree with angelspade regarding the mixing of both Herbert and Marshall tones.

I have V1 it’s a great amp. Boosting it can make it pretty damn nasty specifically with a dirty tree. Diezels for the most part don’t have the high end sizzle a recto has. I’ve seen people like Jen’s bogren use the maag eq to address this and it sounds fuckin crazy… the dirty tree does that though. Or you can always have @RedPlated mod it with the negative feedback knob to open it up a bit more.

As far as the live deal… and this honestly goes for any Amps… using the same amp and cab as the other guitarist is fuckin crucial. Most touring acts do this for a reason. And it even goes down to settings most the time. If one guy cranks his mids and the other doesn’t… the guy who cranks the mids is going to be heard over everything including the snare and vocal lol. Even pickups if one guy does passive and the other does active can be a thing. Guitar players always want to be the loudest person in the band and it takes a while to fine tune that and having the guitars be equal and all that. I remember the best sound guy I ever met in Denver was doing our stuff at the gothic and he made suggestions to me and my other guitar player at the time tweaking knobs and stuff… I thought he was crazy because I couldn’t hear myself as much… then we filmed it and talked to people after the show, it was the best we ever fucking sounded lol.

I think vh4 and both Herbert destroy any recto
No comparison in my mind
. Just destroy and recto I’ve heard . Rev f or c or whatever . I just don’t get recto
Like a lot of people say Jeff Loomis recto is the best . I ve never snitching special
Korn hit the only recto tones I’ve liked . I just don’t get the recto love at all

I would replace a pickup bf an amp, plus I can read between the lines, this is not the amp for me.

Maybe the Driftwood Atlas...
