Been looking at some guitars on GC Used and being that I’m finding you really need to play them in person was considering getting 3 or 4 and hoping for a winner and returning the rest. Anyone ever done this with success.

Nope
I know what i want then just shop who can give me the best deal even if i go used

No, you just buy one you like and get used to it 😎 all my guitars have all different necks and trems, string through, etc. Just buy the one you think will get you the most chicks and play it.

No I just go into the store to play them first if I can or do a store transfer request.
I highly doubt my local will bring in 4 Les Paul’s for me to “try”. A lot of it is neck shape, frets and weight for me. Something that over the phone is impossible. Now if it was a recent year 50’s or 60’s, I’m familiar with them and they’re readily available to play as far as new.
I’m looking more so at previous years like mid 2000’s etc when they had one shape and tended to have decent sized frets, but it’s been too long for me to remember what they were like.
First world problems but the current 50’s neck is bigger than I want and the 60’s neck is thinner than I want and they all have tiny ass frets.

Edit….yeah they would never bring them in for shipping costs alone. Any GC store would just say buy them and return what you don’t like.

I haven't bought 3-4 at once, but I bought three of the same model in a row, returning them and getting another

this was in the mid teens when gibson QC was really bad and I didn't want to get stuck with a lemon

so I "abused" their return policy - and i'm very glad I did, as those les paul supremes were all terrible

wouldn't be necessary with gibson now, their QC is quite good, but as long as you actually go through with returning them I don't see this as a bad idea

I actually got decent results from just calling the stores and getting in hand pics sent and asking them about neck shapes, frets etc. pleasantly surprised that with three stores they were all decently knowledgeable able and easy going about emailing some pics. Two out of the three guitars looked quite different from the website picks and unfortunately not for the better. One was described as a thinner neck than a 60’s, so hard no there. Just went to show, three guitars that all looked promising were a bust.
If you’re a hard pass on pale rosewood on a guitar and you see one online that it is anything but black as night I highly recommend getting them to email you a couple of pics of the board and the top. Don’t know if it’s lighting or if they’re manipulating these pics but you can’t trust them for an accurate take.
I think for a Les Paul I’ll need to make the drive to Nashville and do the rounds.

I buy them 6 at a time.

Ones I don't like get to hang in office waiting room.

Mr. Moneybags here buys Les Pauls in bulk and asks if that's normal.

No. We buy them one at a time.

I mean RT has always been the tan pants of metal. You won’t see a post like this anywhere else 🤷‍♂️

nope ... if you're looking for a "winner" you won't find it @ GC.
You will find "charity case" $300 guitars for $900 bucks all day long tho.

Before Covid pre 2020 you could find a winner all day. Post covid I have no idea - I haven’t been in the market for a new Les Paul in a while, but Gibson has for sure stepped up their quality game. I’m sure I could find something at a GC but I’d probably have to travel to a few different stores before I could find a good one.

If you haven’t worked up to credit limit of at least 20K on a CC by your 40-50’s you’re not doing life right. Plus It’s not about keeping them, it’s about finding one to keep. The rest go back. Don’t see any crap being said to the guys who have multiple Wizards, Bogners etc. and they kept all of those. Even if a I had found a keeper I would have returned it to get it off my CC and rebought it on the gear card for the 6 month promo.
The three Les Paul’s I was considering didn’t even add up to one new Wizard 🤷‍♂️.

I've found a couple of keepers on GC used, but have returned at least 4 or 5 guitars to them, because we just didn't get along.

I only usually buy one at a time, though.
