Its just not for me but if You dig it more power to You and whatever makes You enjoy, have fun and be happy *_*
And there you go. This applies to everyone and all amps. For example, I've yet to play a Friedman that did anything for me, I mean everytime I plug into one I go, am I missing something here 'cause I don't get it. But that doesn't mean they aren't great amps, plenty of players dig them, we know Dave is a master builder but they're just not for me.

As a Marshall guy, I love my JVM's but not everyone does and that's fine. We all like what we like. Thank goodness for the incredible options out there, might not always be this way.

vm which is another jcm 800 liniage
From my understanding the Vintage Modern has a JTM45 lineage. I remember reading an article where Steve Dawson said he designed it to be a hot-rodded JTM45/100. He said his design philosophy was imagining if the JTM series continued to evolve along a parallel path with the JCM.

Correct. The LDR mode is pure JTM 45/100. I probably should have used different words in my post, the grammar nazi are strong here.....tgp v2.0

The HDR mode was described by some as a hot-rodded jcm 800 sound. It has an extra gain stage.

Regardless it is a fantastic amp, and is criminally underrated.

Love my 2466 halfstack!!!!

I kinda agree with the Kid, the jcm800 is a kinda boring, overpriced amp. Especially these days with all the amplifiers out there. Personally, I find the 2203 unusable without a boost, and even then it leaves a little to be desired.

Nah, no grammar nazi. Just didn't realize you were talking tone of the HDR mode and not overall circuit.

I have a 2466 as well. I got it with the intention of modding it like Jason/Headfirst did to one. It sounded too good stock to change anything. My only sort of complaint is the volume difference between LDR & HDR, but I'm not switching between those on the fly so it's mostly a non-issue. Definitely an underrated amp. I think people just didn't get the idea when they first came out so they passed and it never caught on the way it should have.

Great to hear you got one too.

I agree, stock is amazing. LDR is my favorite clean tone ever, even better than a vintage twin reverb we once owned.

And, yes, it is not a channel switcher....should be considered two different amps in one box.

The base 2203 is a really disappointing amp for live general use. No cleans if you dial for gain. No place to insert time based effects behind distortion. Insufficient gain for music from the last 50 years.

Yes it's percussive. No I don't give a shit. It's useless for 100% of applications I have for an amp.

The Jubilee has the same power section as the jcm 800 as far as I know. Obviously they have different circuits as the Jubilee has 2 switchable channels, rythm clip etc...

The VMs HDR mode is emulating a modded jcm 800. I realize it isn't an exact copy of the 800 circuit....it actually is based off a jtm 45/100 and uses kt66 tubes.

I forget what George was using when I saw him in 1984, but his tone was pretty fucking killer.

Here is a video comparing theses amps:

The VM is as others have said a JTM style amp with mods. The two channels are bridged internally. I forget how they labebelled the two channels but essentially it was the treble and bass channels could be dialed in. They then had an extra gain stage that could be used or bypassed. Also a post phase inverter master volume. And the effects loop. So basically a Superlead with an added bypassable gain stage and master volume. And as you mentioned the KT66 tubes. Can’t comment on the power section, probably similar as most Marshalls tend to be.
I liked the VM other than it wasn’t very loud. I don’t need super loud by any means, but it just seemed quiet for 100 watts. The effects loop wasn’t useable how I use an amp. Not a big deal though. Also hate post phase master volumes, so just left it on ten. Fun amp to play.

First time I saw Dokken was 82 on Breaking the Chains. I was thinking he was usuing Randalls but may have been when I saw Tooth and Nail. Been too many years. Both were good shows.

And yes I am one that hates the 2203’s. Don’t like the high end, midrange and low end…also don’t like the feel of them. Plexi circuit works better for me.

I can't believe the 2203 has so many haters. This reminds me of the TGP thread where so many people said Eat Em And Smile sucked. Bizarro world.
Never liked them. Had plenty of them and recently picked up another cheap. Still don’t like them. 😄

I have grown to appreciate the hotrodded plexi circuit more than the hotrodded 800 as well. That said, if I only had a stock 800, I could make it work easy.

As far as better amp, I would say for metal, the list is nearly endless.
Wizard mtl, mcii, hellrazor
Bogner twin, snorkler
Friedman naked
MGL RED

Mesa mark, dual or triplle rec
Diezel bigmax, vhii, vh4
Fryette Ultralead
Lenz Octane
Monomyth (anything)
Groundzero (anything)
I really could go on

For rock, that is very subjective. But i think if I were only playing rock, i would take an 800 all day if only for the iconic sound

Honestly I'm kind of jabbing but also more serious. I have had the ability to play the 2203x in store and its great, but would be curious for something new in the same price point. I like it more than the SB and BE 100 and have compared them in the same room.

If people say it sucks then list a 5k amp it doesn't really do anything for me. For THAT sound its the best I've played so far, (edging out a small box for example) .. but for $2900 (edit 2600 now at SW) what beats it at that price?

Most of the other options are either a used more expensive unobtainium or something boutique I'd have to get without being able to try it somewhere.
The snorkler is also in the running and I think the el34 stealth covers tons of bases. So new, at the price point, what else competes and edges it out?

Similar amps are mostly 50w.. looking at the small box, mgl 50, etc.. stuff under 3k I can go buy new now. I really like the TK Royalist and Plex but no loop
