1. He was literally a registered Democrat. You're assuming hes a republican because a republican offered him a plea deal. The reason for the plea wasn't a political favor.
2. Its not quite that cut and dry of a case. Lets not omit the fact that the first trial ended in a mistrial split 7-5. Legal experts and prosecutors didn't have a high level of confidence that they could get a guilty plea, thus settled for a plea bargain.
