Monsters are Horribly Bright...
Interesting how people hear things differently...you're the first person that I've ever heard say that.
Personally I've found Monsters to attenuate the highs while promoting a strong midrange. I like them tonally but I've had bad luck with reliability.

I am with Rupe on this one........

IIRC, that photo was taken during our preamp tube cover removal experiments...or was direct mounted humbuckers vs rings?

Can't remember if it was one of those or not. I am thinking it was the HT fuse direction reversal mod.

I did determine that not only do the amps sound better when you flip the HT fuse, and removing the preamp covers....but if you just leave the back of the head shell, the tone is better.

Man, is the horse really dead? This is a gear board after all. Is there anything between your hands and your ears that DOESN'T make a difference? The whole board is a dead horse if so.

There is little that doesn't make a difference. The key is if the difference is enough to warrant spending the time or money in perfecting it. I have personally never AB'ed my different cables. That doesn't mean that I don't think cables make a difference, I do, but for me I am trying to concentrate more on my playing and less on tweaking. I am finding I have less time to play than I used to....

FWIW, I wouldn't waste 5 minutes or $5 on it either way. Perfecting it in the Testoster-Room is one thing, and they won't apply somewhere else. My only point was there is a difference between a Monster caliber cable and some of the higher end, HI-FI quality cables---Zaolla in my instance. Also, the point being is that the higher end isn't necessarily the best for all amps. There was an audible improvement to me in overall tone, stepping down to a Monster (or whatever other cable exhibits the same qualities), over a higher end cable.

Yes, instrument and speaker cables make a big difference in tone and feel.

So, who here has tried an upgraded or "hi-fi" power cable with their amp? I've heard that this can make quite a difference also.

its snake oil, there are many more important components to consider - a power cable definitely is not one of them. the gauge only matters at transient current and voltage levels when your amplifier is cranked and transformers begin to experience some sagging, usually before the tubes in production amplifiers. custom one off builds, not so much.

gold pin tubes i can hear a difference in though, i was quite shocked when i told my buddy he was full of shit for purchasing a full set of them. come to find out he hates them, and after doing a full swap with them one by one with the same exact tubes where the only difference were the pin materials themselves and tube QC, i have to agree - gold pin tubes are not my forte.

Steve

I must admit you have me curious to do an AB test with the cables I have. I just have home built pro-co cables and home built Canare cables.

There's got to be some difference Matt, no? I mean I've experienced first hand the drastic
difference between instrument cables, with the cable from the guitar being the most crucial and effective. The power cable has to have some effect on the tone. Not saying I'm going to run out and buy a new one bit I'd like to hear an a/b comparison. Maybe Greg can make a new blind test clip. :D

Seems every variable has some effect.
