I thought the mode four came in 2 configurations; the 280 with 4 k75s and the 400 with 4 k100s? I have a 280 and it doesn't sound like v30s.
i forget if the Mode Four 4x12 i had was model 280 or 400, and i don't know if they changed the speakers to something else later, but the stock speaker in them for a long time was "Vintage 30 MF", which Hellatone also sold for a while as the Hellatone 60L (not 60).

it's a variation on the normal V30, custom-made for Marshall. the model # on the white sticker on the side of the magnet is different. Hellatone used to say it had a different voice coil but was otherwise the same as a V30. it sounds noticeably different.

pop open your cab if you like and see what yours are.
Popped the back off and sure enough, it does have those funky v30mf. It doesn't sound like V30's thats for sure.

I am somewhat different as I am not a V30 fan as much.
I use a Marshall 1960AHW with G12H30 Greenbacks. It works great for metal!

I have the straight cab Version. The BHW...I love mine.

There is no best because it is entirely subjective. There is only what your ears tell you and that means it's up to you to try stuff with your other gear and determine what is best for you...

People have recommended stuff to me for certain things and when I've tried the gear, it sounded like shit as often as it sounded good...

Mine never did have those - the guy i got it from ripped me off. I put the V 30's out of my vintage cab in it once - sounded good. I replaced 2 of the V 30's in my vintage cab with weber legacies, and am gonna mix the other 2 in the mode 4 with 2 g12k-100's.
But yes they're bigger than standard sized marshall cabs

Bogner Uberkab. I liked the old rear-loaded one better- less directional.

I had VHT Fatbottom 4x12 and a Bogner Ubercab but sold both. I now have a Bogner straight standard cab.

I thought the P50es sounded good at first, but got tired of them pretty quickly. And definitely wouldn't say they have a strong midrange. I think they do sound closer to K100s than V30s. Ubercab was pretty good, but I think the standard Bogner rearloaded cab kills them both. Plenty tight, more chunky, not as bright as the frontloaded designs. The VHT is also very, very directional.

I don't do 7/8 string or tune any lower than D standard or some drop C, so I can't really speak to that aspect.

I'm not the Cab King™ but +100 on this. I had a VHT D412 it sounded rediculously good but very directional (not to mention the D412 is the less directional of the 2) I was very tempted to drill a hole in it every time I played it. For me the P50 were hate at first note so I went 30x75. Before I sold the cab I threw the P50 back in and was pretty amazed and surprised. Was weird, but I still say they are lacking something. However the P50 ALWAYS sounded good in an extension 412 to make a full stack with the 30x75.

I played an uberkab. Again, sounded killer but was a little too fizzy. I'm still on my quest but that's all I can contribute on the topic.

Of course, but I'd love to get a general consensus. Perhaps replace "best" with "favorite"?
