Not that I'm really experienced at this (but that's never stopped me from giving my opinion before) what about a used DSL then a FJA or Voodoo mod? Should be price-friendly.

I'm sure that would sound great, but I don't know about "price-friendly." Used DSL - $600-$700. Voodoo mod - $300-$800 + shipping. You are into the amp for $1500. Trace does great work, but you need to make sure that the amp is close to what you want before sending it out - can't polish a turd (if that's what you think it is)!!!

Don't know FJA's pricing, but I'm sure it is in the same ballpark.

$275 plus shipping.

Wow that bad boy sounds awesome.Do you improve the reliability of the DSL's at all? I know of an underpowered cap in there that I've seen smoked in a few of these so that is what scares me off of them.The bias from what I've seen drifts a lot in these causing tube failures too.

I haven't seen too many issues with the DSL amps. The one thing I have seen that I do take care of is the speaker jack wiring which can cause the output transformer to fail. I correct that.
If you're talking about the ceramic cap on the power tube socket that gets smoked its not an issue with the cap, it's an impedance mismatch problem that's causing flyback voltage which exceeds the caps rating.

Hey Guys thanks for all the great info! I appreciate it. Since posting this I acquired a HW Marshall 1959 and the thing is a BEAST. THe biggest bottom I've ever heard and super touch sensative. I can feel the strings like I've never felt them before. The only thing it doesn't have is alot of gain. What head has huge bottom end, is very touch sensative, and has a lot of gain? I don't like it too compressed sounding either. Just a head that the back row can feel me raking the pick off the string. Any opinions on that? My Hand Wired is now my benchmark of a good head.
Is there any way to mod this head to KEEP the big bottom and touch snesativity while juicing up the gain alot?

Congrats on the head - have you tried a Boss SD-1 or Tubescreamer to get a bit more gain?

Thank you. I have used a Keeley DS-1. It did make it more gainy but I'd really like to hear the SD-1 from Keeley in front of her. Their clip sounds really nice.

I love all of those amps, but for me the Einstein wins. It has huge bottom end that stays tight, is definitely a middy ass amp, has a ton of gain and is the definition of a quality amp.
