With the bass pot low, your going to have MORE bass.
The controls on the Tim and Timmy are cuts. So with the bass, the higher you turn the knob, the more bass your cutting out. If you have the knob on low, your going to have more bass than with it dimed.

Yeah, I know about the reverse functioning tone knobs (pretty silly). Still, with the bass low, it was flubby into my Marshall.

MIJ SD-1 if you want to tighten things up and add clarity
Bad Monkey if you want a mid hump and a tighter tone

Both good pedals, but they suck way too much low-end! The Monkey makes my amp sound like a Valvestate!

That's what I mean by tightening things up. SD-1 with a bass heavy guitar such as a Les Paul is a great combo. The Bad Monkey with a Strat/Tele or bright LP is killer. I've been using both pedals for years and they do not make my any of my amps sound like a Valvestate. They enhance the tone. I've got a Royal MSG 100 (exact clone of Jimmy Page's '69 Marshall that he used for TSRTS), and the Bad Monkey makes that amp absolutely sing.

PS: I just use them as clean boosts. Volume maxed out and no gain added at all.

Ah, just boost and no gain? I'll give that a try.

Sometimes I'll add just a small touch of "drive" to the SD-1, but 95% of the times I have it off. I always keep the gain off on the BM. Volume is maxed at all times with both pedals...

What amp are you boosting Mike? I use a SD-1 and Keeley TS9 to boost my Marshall. I also use a Timmy for other amps.

This was a great thread and seeing as we already have a ton of these, why not bring it back again! I would like to add good ol fashioned OD-1 or clone ( I am using a Noah's Ark yellow overdrive) and it is the sound I have been after for what seems like ages. Right in middle of what I like about a TS808 and an SD-1. Still though, something Guv'nor ish still interests me and the Riot clones seem cheap enough to give a whirl though into a JCM800 I am not sure it wouldn't be too much of a good thing and turn into a bee in a box type deal.

Man I am gonna go a few ways here.

First, I have come to the conclusion the best OD/Boost for Marshall type amps is either a RAT or Colorsound Overdriver based OD. Not even kidding. The Mooer Black Secret sound MASSIVE in front of my Quick Rod and Henning. Very little drive and Filter to taste. the Monsterpiece COD was also amazing. based off the Colorsound, it gave a righteous edge to both amps as well. The Colorsound model in the Helix does great.

Black Arts Toneworks has a Colorsound based pedal called the Black Forest which is amazing.

For TS types I can't recommend the OD808X from Maxon. I like TS types a lot but man a Marshall type and a RAT = delish!

Now I want a Cusack Screamer V2....Thanks Guys. I have somewhere between 8-12 Boost Pedals Already.

Is the colorboost in the treble boost vein? I have a catalinbread naga viper that can also serve as a boost which does a great job of pushing my 800 but I feel the od-1 clone already does that in the forward mid range that I liked. The Cusack looks interesting but a bit pricey unless you score one in the classifieds here. I decided to go another route and ordered myself an older Marshall guvnor' out of Japan. This one I know works fantastic with 2204 style amps, a little subtler than a rat pedal. So many great boosts out there, new and old. I do also agree that you don't need expensive boutique drives to get the job done. The classics work just fine at that.

Two of my favorites are the ToneFreak Naked OD and the Black Country Custom Iommi Boost.

The Naked OD works great with every amp I've tried it with, which doesn't usually happen with OD pedals. No coloring the amps tone with this one, it feels like an extension of the amp when engaged.

The Iommi boost is just flat out killer sounding with lots of options allowing you to pair it up really well with any amp. The low and high controls shine on this one.

On the cheap, the Randall Mor is a great sounding boost as well as the MXR custom badass modified OD.

There are so many OD's out there now. I have several on my list to try but for me, I am currently using the Buxom Boost. I have a Koko which I have not even tried with my Mesa yet but I will probably never sell the Koko it works great for me.

I used to only use the Maxon 808 but the Koko kicked it off. Now having another amp I need to revisit lots of things.

I cant have a "best" but my top 3 are Koko, Buxom, King of Tone. I ended up selling the KOT because it is so expensive but I still have many boosts to try.

Seymour Duncan Pickup booster does a lot of tricks for me, and does em pretty damned well.

Tonefreak Naked Overdrive. Designed by Dave Friedman, it kicks ass in front of any amp I've tried it with!

The two pedals I have now and work great with all of my amps are the Koko boost reloaded, love how it's got the 3 way voicing option and Maxxon OD-9. After seeing this thread makes me want to buy more.

Just bought a Framus Cobra, wondering what the best boost option for this would be, considering cusack screamer v2, Maxon od808, koko boost. Anyone have a suggestion?

So many options!

I’ve used many, and most were good to great.... but always end up back with a Maxon OD808.
