Jose died Sep. 16, 1994. According to his tattoo website, Blades was born in 72, so he was ~ 22 when Jose died - theoretically he could have talked to him on the phone no problem as a teenager. It also says Blades opened his tattoo shop in 1990, when he would have been 18...

I knew Jose Arredondo reasonably well - he was a nice, but overweight and seemingly unwell older man when I met him in '84. He did two mods for me and also was the tech I used to maintain the amps. Cool guy - full of stories of EVH and VH backstage shenanigans that he seemed to participate in and quite enjoy... :D

That "blog" in the original post is the biggest pile of ridiculous drivel I've ever read. Seems to be working for Blades with some people buying into it though, so more power to him...

Steve

Steve since you actually did talk to jose can you put a rumor to rest?
There is a guy on the forums(you probably know who he is so i wont name him) that say's JOSE told him the on VH I eddie used a hand made(by jose) OD pedal to push the plexi more?
Did jose ever mention anything of this kind about eddie? I already know the answer but still would like to hear it from someone who did indeed meet jose

Jose never told me anything about EVH using any OD on VH1, but to be fair, I didn't really ask him a lot of questions about EVH's gear. I just wanted his gain mod in my amps, which I'd already heard other local guitar players using and he shared with me what he felt like sharing, which was more tales of backstage debauchery and snapshots he had than gear details. I never pressed for any details, personally. EVH was really secretive at that point and frankly, I doubt Jose would have casually shared details on his gear, although, knowing his personality, I could easily see him throwing out something he knew was bullshit (with a wink :D ) to throw someone who was pressing him off. When I was at the shop, I did see numerous Van Halen logo'd Marshalls that he had modded for EVH - mostly metal panel 4-holer JMPs as well as heads from many other touring guys like Jake E. Lee, local heroes, etc., etc. I also know he was working on an amp with EVH before he died and those VH logo'd amps might have been prototypes of that, or Ed may have used them live (I believe he did) - they looked more stock than my mods did.

I personally think VH1 is a mind-blowingly great player through a stock plexi with the variac at 90V, Echoplex'd and with some great production by TT... YMMV and endless arguing is sure to follow...

Thanks and i agree VH I was the plexi and definitely all about the way Ted T and Don L got it to tape.
even eddie said "don made it sound like more than it was" ;)
There is only one guy on the forums( i am sure you seen his post's) that spouts this OD box theory and like you said maybe jose did tell him that just to throw him off the right track

Good God!!! In one of those reviews someone claims they got Hep B from Blades tats!!

:hys: :hys:

"...that'll be $250 for the B mod..."

:hys:

the list of "clients" that wanna slap his face like community bongos at a crack cocaine festival grows hourly.

I read through this thread MST3K commentary playing in my head.

An amp going for $3k likely cost 1300-2k to build. Custom manufactured chassis, transformers, boards, and headshells, especially if all USA made, are not cheap. And decent capacitors cost money, even if you get Column 500 pricing on them. And let's not forget 6-10 hours of skilled labor from start to finish.

plain and simple, dude's a fuckin retard mongoloid backwoods hick with sleep apnea/asthma/gurgle voice/andre the giant tongue that you can barely understand in his videos.

he types just like he talks.

and, those are exactly the type of hands i dont want in my amps. at that point, why not just learn to read a schem and DIY instead of some shitheel mongoloid with a lie some flunky ass 8th grader couldn't even fictionalize so terribly and transparently. never mind trying to make himself look better by accusing everyone else in the amp mod industry.

he sounds like one of my junior high school skateboard buddies lying about meeting tony hawk and rodney mullen earlier in the day of a skatefest we all went to here in Pittsburgh that the bones brigade and some visioni skaters were at...somehow this dude i was hanging with all day had time to get private lessons from hawk and mullen in a parking garage at the mall 30 miles away from where the demo was 2 hours later.
people will say anything to make themselves look, feel, sound, appear more important than they are. dude told the story all through high school and probably still does to this day.
that's what billy blades is to me. a pathological, narcissistic liar with a penchant for the dramatic and an unaware (albeit unintended, clunky) flair for the trisomic.
he's a the proverbial "bull in a china shop" socially and credibility wise.

i'll say it again, he's a fuckin retard, a liar, and a scam artist. pot meet kettle.

if you buy any of his products, you deserve what you get. save the money and buy a fortin, gower, or henning amp and be assured the work is clean, mapped out right and done correctly.
