It's a measurable fact, bro.

The world's oceans are rapidly acidifying. As the ocean absorbs about 25% to 30% of human-made carbon dioxide emissions, it reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid. This shifts ocean chemistry, lowering the water's pH and making it less basic.

Since the Industrial Revolution, the average surface ocean pH has dropped from roughly 8.2 to 8.1
Because the pH scale is logarithmic, this seemingly small drop equates to a massive 26 to 30% increase in acidity.
Historical Speed: The current rate of acidification is roughly ten times faster than any change seen in the geological record over the last 55 million years.

The Great Barrier Reef has declined over 14% due to acidification. I think I'll trust scientists over random guitar forum bros. Unless you have multiple degrees in science I'm going with those who do. Cheers MM.

The GBR hasn't declined. In 2024 (IIRC) it was the biggest on-record, substantially-larger than what it was back in the '80s when records began.

Freshwater-snail shells are fine even down into sub-pH7 levels (actually-acid) and they're made of the same materials, so there's that. A pH of 8.1 is still ridiculously-alkaline in comparison.

Re surface acidification:
If you wanted to dupe the world into thinking that the oceans are acidifying, what'd be the best method?
I say measure it at the surface, the interface with CO2, and claim that you "know" that it's more-acidic than it's been in millions of years.

You can run 50 to 20x the normal level of CO2 in a freshwater aquarium - 30 -> 40ppm instead of the nature-identical 2ppm level. How much carbonate buffering is required in order to be able to do this? A couple o' German Degrees (under 40ppm) of carbonate hardness.

Hear that? 40ppm! How many ppm of carbonate hardness do you think the oceans have? I can tell you that there're roughly 7 grams per litre and that there're roughly 1.3 quadrillion litres in the oceans. That would contain roughly 10 quadrillion grammes,10 trillion kg or 10 billion tonnes.

The boffins are asking us to believe that a 25% increase from, say, 300ppm CO2 (that's being generous) in the atmosphere to 400ppm is gonna somehow eat into the capacity of 10 billion tonnes of carbonate buffer, and that's not to mention the other alkaline salts. In fresh water you can go to 15 to 20x the natural level fed by the atmosphere... and that's fresh water!

It beggars belief and is an example of the sort of sleight-of-hand and ignorance of sheer scale that've used to fool us. Be fooled if you like; I refuse to be.

Oh, and you want to "trust scientists over random guitar forum bros". Scientists with an agenda. A forum bro' who's kept and bred fish for 55 years.

Oh and one other thing:
Ridiculous that they talk about the oceans' being more-alkaline millions of years ago. If you calculate the total amount of minerals, principally calcium carbonate 'cause it's most-present in rocks, that's spewed 24/7 into the oceans by the rivers of the world, you'll come up with figures that'll tell you that the oceans are in fact becoming "saltier" for want of a better term, quite-quickly. Duh. The minerals remain as evaporation feeds the rain that washes over the rocks and brings more in... ad-infinitum. "Scientists" rarely consider this stuff 'cause it undermines their uniformitarian world view supporting a "young" ocean.

As I said, believe what you want. I didn't arrive at my beliefs via blind faith in the narrative; I investigated this stuff of my own volition for many decades.

Universities bro'. Practically everything in the natural sciences is agenda-driven and built on houses of cards - assumptions upon assumptions. They don't like it when peeps question assumptions that've been around for eons. If you don't play ball, you don't graduate. Post-grad, if you don't study something that supports, for example, the climate-change agenda, you'll not receive any funding.

All I can suggest is that you consider some of the limiting factors I described.

I can't think of an English word that can do the level of absurdity justice.

Problem is I'm not willing to endure what'd be necessary (you can only imagine the psychological challenge it would be and I'd already copped enough abuse to last a lifetime decades ago - I'm over it), especially 'cause it'd have to be in several related areas. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't go all-out, so to speak.

No matter. I wanted to be a marine biologist since I was 3 but figured (naively) that I'd be able to truly help way-more people if I went the music route.

That endeavour was cock-blocked by one major physical, psychological and financial disaster after the next with heavy-metal poisoning chugging away nicely in the background. I've all but given up at this point.
