Everything makes a difference though with any amp IMO. I used to swear by the Maxon 808 and I used to always say that an EQ in the loop is like taking a blanket off an amp.

With my Mills cab and the Rev 2 neither of those apply. My eq is now my lead boost and the Maxon is now my other guitarists boost.

Right there you are describing the Rev 2.

The Rev 2 is what you want. Now, the difficult part is to find one.

My issues with the Rev #2 (of which I owned 2) is that is way too dark sounding and the gain pot on the lead channel is like a linear taper... almost zero to 10 with not enough sweep between. The dark voicing was the killer for me though. And I always needed a boost to get a useable tone. I'd take the TJ over the Rev #2, and a new Blue over either one.

With all due respect, what metal player actually gets a badass tone and does not use a boost in front?

Maybe a few amps here and there can do it but idk man, I typically boost everything and I never max out my gain on my amps, not even close. I do however get what you are saying regarding 0-10 on the gain taper.

I would also say you could get some different speakers for more mids but you like what you like. The Rev 2 and the CL100 are my favorite two amps that I have played.

Most anyone using an Engl or Diezel for example. You don't need a boost like you do with a Recto for example. Spending more than $2k on amp that absolutely needs a boost, special pups, etc to sound great is insane.

This is where I disagree with you my good sir. If I buy a high dollar amp and need to boost it and have to spend some dough on the right pups, I'm fine with that. Whatever it takes for me to achieve the tone/feel I'm after. I haven't owned near the amps that you have, or most of the guys on hear for that matter, but from the amps I've owned and the many others I've played with my cab/guitars/OD, etc, I found that almost all needed to be hit up front with a clean boost for my taste.

I agree with maddnotez in that there are exceptions. The only exception I've run across so far is the Savage. Its actually perfect w/out a boost for me.

There's no right or wrong though;we just all have different tastes

I know some swear by the boost... I only use for another flavor when needed (rarely). Not an absolute evil. But if it gets you where you need to go... do it!

If you get the chance... try one. It's different. When I played it I was like... okay... what changed here. My friend whose owned a few said the same thing. Way better/different sounding amp than the previous years. More present and way more cutting. I tried another 2015 Uber and was like, yep the new ones sound way better. Caps, circuit change, who knows... but try one.

Just the amp, koko boost v1 and Decimator.

Should be able to for sure. I've emailed Engl several times in the recent past with Serial #'s on used amps I was looking at buying, and they were able to tell me what year those amps were produced. I'd imagine Bogner would do the same for ya.

I boost everything. My rev 2 and Cobra being 2 amps that probably like a boost more than anything I've had.

Some amps that are really "presence challenged" like an original 3 channel Recto, Cobra, first 2 Uber versions, even a 5150/5150II (aka 6505/6505+ to some degree) just to name a few... do benefit from a boost. But there are plenty of amps that really don't need/benefit much from one. Almost every Engl, Diezel, Fryette UL, and Fortin Natas. The boost does little to nothing... and the boost, usually makes them sound worse (just adds noise and compression). The Randall Satan is another... no boost needed. Super tight and articulate. And I tried several boosts with it... they didn't do much of anything. The boost thing is somewhat analogous to the depth mod on a Soldano SLO... when you crank the volume the depth mod is pointless (which is probably why I prefer the stock SLO). When you crank up most tube amps you negate the boost benefits, in most cases... and sometimes it becomes a negative depending on volume, venue, and purpose.

It took a little tweaking on the amp settings but the Bogner has never sounded so good before.

I can make a before and after but all that I have is an iPhone so I'm not sure if justice would be served.

I will also say the slightest benefits make a huge difference to my ears. The Maxon was king with my Pitbull but when I A/B the Maxon and TS9 on my Rev 2 I knew I needed an improvement.

I have the Original and not the reloaded. I waited for a long time to find the right deal but one popped up on ebay for a great price and no bidders. Got lucky, pretty expensive pedal otherwise but worth it.

I was rather surprised at how loose and undefined both Herberts I played were without a boost. One I owned for about a month and a half or so, and the other I played quite extensively on several occasions in a local store with my cab and guitar. IDK, maybe both had tubes that were on the beat side or some other issue, but I think the odds of both having something wrong were pretty slim. They are however quite high wattage heads and maybe they needed to be cranked up to small arena volumes before they tightened up on their own.

Boosted they tightened up to a really sweet spot. Tight enough but still had some sag/forgiveness that made them a real joy to play. Man that amp felt fucking good under the fingers. I could be wrong, but thats kinda what I expect the Uber to feel like.

I have only played one Herbert in a store for like 10 minutes tops. I skimmed through quickly but went right to the brutal channel and played with the mid cut.

I wish I spent more time with it but MAN. That amp will crush a rib cage. It was so brutal it was insane. I could see not needing a boost with that amp but again I only had a few minutes with it.

My only complaint was that it was too hi fi or processed sounding for me.
