"Bogner blanket"

Geese......this is one of those amps that I would love to own. I've tried many of them and I enjoy each one. Just love the tone out of them. I wish years ago I would have just bought this instead of the Einstein or the Herbert that I bought and sold away. This is one amp I would have most certainly kept. You folks that have one have a fantastic amp, Enjoy!

Used to own a 101b (should have kept it) and currently own a TwinJet. I would have to agree any blanket sound coming out of either of these amps would be user error.

The blanket effect actually concerns XTC only. I played Shiva and Uberschall and these are totally different amps, tuned in other freqs, so no blanket there definitely.

Today on a rehersals I switched on C40 cap. And although having linear Treble pot, 22nF PI output caps and modified preamp, I immediately went back in the mix. After switching it off - I was there again :).

But maybe that's only my ears :)

Regards, Andy :)

I've owned a few bogners, and they do all seem to share qualities in the way they are voiced. I remember being blown away by the tone while playing alone or in a music store and instantly buying the amp only to find that I didn't care much for it in a band situation. If you are playing with a two guitar band it can be hard to cut through so I get where the blanket thing comes from. If you are the only guitar player in the band then it won't be a problem.

No blanket with my Bogner Shiva combo. I think the amount of low mids and bedroom volume may be the culprit. I was able to get a close out at GC for $1400 with 2 year pro warranty and so far no complaints other than trying to find el34's since SED winged are no longer made.

SED EL34's are still available in quite a few places.
Prices seem to be just a wee bit less than for 6L6's.

I saw Greg Germino gig a couple weekends ago. His Germino amps cut through perfectly but his other guitarists 101b sounded buried in the mix.

You can get 101b s to sound Marshall bright but you need some some extreme EQ. Presence must be high.

There's no denying that the XTC is darker than say your average Marshall, but it's a sum of all parts, guitar wood, pickups etc etc. There's no reason why an XTC can't be set up to cut in the mix. User error?

On a gig the Marshall will always be more present in the mix. Marshall frequencies sit perfectly between the bass and drums and vocals.

yep... and what's weird is that I thought everyone generally agreed on this back in 2005 when you could buy a 101b really cheap.. I got one from mosaholic for 1850 just to check it out, sold it three days later.

IMO, One man's mud is another man's warmth... Not everyone hears the same.

True. Then again, some people who's opinions I think highly of, and of which are touring artists, have also stated that Bogners sound like they have blankets over them.

Who might those be?

Steve Lukather and Jerry Cantrell hate 'em

Lukather has been using 101B's for years now!! It seems strange that he would choose a blanket as his main amp?? Just sayin
