I've been jamming with some friends this year in hopes on playing bass in a new band. Since the beginning of the year, we've jammed maybe eight times, and kinda started writing two tunes. We never finished anything. Most rehearsals are spent relearning what we did weeks ago. We haven't jammed in over a month. We won't be able to jam for the next month. It's been rough.

We decided today to hang it up, because it isn't working out. We're still meeting up to jam tonight. I guess this is the musical equivalent to break up sex?

Jamming is the reason why nothing got done lol

Rehearsals are for performing finished songs, performing half finished songs, trying changes made to finished songs, or adding parts to finished songs

it's not for getting stoned and someone plays a I IV V or a riff so everyone can wank off - everyone can do that at home, and much more comfortably now

There's no reason to have a "jam sesh" unless you're trying to work something specific out. Aimless jamming is for stoned teenagers, not adult musicians

Take it from me, gotta have one person just start writing the riffs and lyrics. In my band that is me. We started years ago just jamming and kind of seeing what style we would do and would always be fun but felt like it wasn't going anywhere.

I just started riffing one night and put lyrics to a song. Then wrote two others the same night. After that I just started writing out of pure adrenaline and drive to do something. I have a shit ton of songs now. Every once in awhile I'll just start writing. I never was the primary singer in a band and had barely written songs just determination got me there.

Personally I wouldn't be into it. 8 practices since January with no real schedule going forward and barely any material written...that's pretty just a jam session in itself instead of a band. Really don't see "one last jam" really being worthwhile for anyone.

Yeah especially with the tools we have available nowadays theres no excuse for not knowing what the band is going to be playing in advance

Even if your songs aren't complete/done, you can make demos of pieces of songs that you can hash out when you get in the same room with everyone

I seriously don't understand how anyone expects to get anything done by "just jamming maaaaaan"

That sounds like a gigantic waste of time

I came to that realization after I joined a band long ago and it ended up just being a glorified brofest with no direction or goals...the "gettin' together and having beers and bongs, and just crankin' it up" is fine with some old buddies if everyone understands thats all it is and with no expectations. But if it's going to be an actual band with any real goals, everyone needs to be contributing ideas on a regular basis...even if it's simple as everyone sending iphone clip ideas into a drop box. When ideas in original bands stop flowing, the band dies.

Yep absolutely, if you're just jamming to jam and everyone understands that's the idea? Then that's great.

If you're in a band, you sort most of the arrangement stuff out BEFORE you get together in a room - maybe you tweak the arrangements, maybe you add to them, but everyone shows up knowing what they're supposed to be playing.

If everyone shows up to "jam" and there's no songs, you didn't even have a band, you had conjugal visits
