I know its probably an easy fix but sometimes its about the principal, I dont like being told or forced into something! I hope they take a hit because of this.

While I don't think there is anything wrong with having a google account-I don't think it is something that youtube should force on its members. I could definitely see it being a deal breaker for a number of people.
