So I'm wanting to learn more about modding amps and my favorite tones are those of hotrodded Marshalls playing 80s hard rock and metal. I'm sure most just had a pedal in front of them more than they were modded. I was thinking about building one but it might be more than I am ready for at the moment. Instead of buying a modded amp I thought I'd start with a true JCM tone and learn it well (I've never played one before). I'd also study the layout and teach myself the design with a well built handwired amp. Then later on mod it and see what I like the best.
I'm mainly a bedroom player but I hear that even at lower volumes the bigger iron sounds better. So should I get the 2202 or the 2204? I'm thinking the 2204 will be true to the tone and have more room to view things and work on.
This is some of the best tone I've heard. I think it is a 1979 JMP 100 watt with a PD-1 in front of it. This is the tone I really want but I also want a little more modded tone too and it would be cool if it was switchable.
