I like the Intellifex over the G-major,Rocktron stuff is pretty cheap,as well as Alesis stuff.
The older ART stuff is junk IMO so is Digitech. But it's been several years since I've used Digitech. Rane is quality,so is furman, and are also cheap priced.
ADA?

i would agree with your assessment for a couple of reasons. once you get past the steel chassis on the x11 it really isn't built that well. i've had problems with the screw on the power supply continually loosening and the switches aren't very robust. hopefully some thread lock on the screw fixes the power supply issue.
as regards the dsp 128? i don't really like it with the rocktron. i've been looking for an intellefex locally.. but they're as hard to find in these parts as a 2x12 cab.
i've used the 128 mostly for vocal processing for live use with a handful of presets. i've heard better stuff.. but it does yoeman's work and i'm o.k. with that for now.
the real drawback to the unit is that you have to replace the battery every year or two and when you do you loose everything you stored. if you went to the user side and programmed some specific effects you'd have to reprogram it every time you changed batteries. if you failed to write all of the info down you'd be back to square one. a real pita!

i think the gap likes humbuckers more than single coils. imho it gets kinda noisy and compressed as the gain increases.. even with the hush engaged. might just be me though. :)
it also has an annoying "tink" to the treble when i used single coils.. even set clean.

Brands:
ADA
Rocktron
Alesis

I have an ADA mp-1 laying around somewhere. Maybe I should try to find it, and send it to a crazy modder? :D

There are a couple on GC website for 100 and under.

Can't go wrong with an Axe-FX, it's got pretty much anything you need in it. It's a neat little unit, surprised more people don't know about it. Price? For what it does, I consider it dirt cheap.

the key word in this topic is "cheap"

if you consider $1,600 dirt cheap, then you're definately in a minority. because an alesis quadraverb can be had for $50. $50 is cheap - not $1,600+.

are they the pre "2000 Chameleon" or are they 2000 Chameleon's?

I was reffering to pre "2000 Chameleon" - the last time seached about 2 months ago, these units were going from $200 - $300 used

I've owned every rocktron preamp from the original GAP to a 2000 Chameleon & IMO those pre "2000 Chameleon" (ie On-line & the original Black Face) are still top-notch gear by today's standards

The 2000 Chameleon is not the same tonewise at all and personally I wouldn't waste a $100 on those - FYI

yeah the pre 2000 chameleon. there were a couple of those for 80$

Cheap and totally transparent

Check on ebay for an Intellifex or Replifex.
